Ethernet Ports Not Working, but show connectivity via lights.

Recommended Posts

So I've had my netduma a long while now. Along the way, I simplified my setup and haven't used it. I went to hook it back up tonight...

I cannot access the netduma in anyway via a wired connection. The netduma shows lights for connections, but my PC and PS4 will not work. They don't show any connection.

I can access the netduma via wifi however. There is still no internet access, but I can access the interface.

Are all the ethernet ports blown? If so would they still show the connectivity lights? I am out of warranty, I am sure, what are my options.

Thanks for the help.

-Yes, I factory reset. Disconnected the modem for a period and the netduma.

Hi, welcome to the forum! Depending on your ISP, I'd say the most likely reason is that you haven't entered your PPPoE username and password on the Netduma interface. This would prevent you from being able to access the Internet using the Netduma, whether wired or wireless.

You will be able to find your PPPoE details in documentation provided by your ISP, or on your modem interface. It should be relatively easy to find. You will need to enter the PPPoE details on the Netduma interface under Settings > WAN.

Please let us know if this solves your issue :)

My ISP doesn't use PPPoE settings and I never used them before.

  1. Select the PPPoE tab and make sure that Connect using PPPoE is not selected.
  2. Select the Proxies tab and make sure that none of the proxies are selected. Note: You may or may not select Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV); it does not affect your Internet connection or ability to go online. However, once you are connected, if you have trouble connecting to an FTP site, you may opt to change your selection at that time.
  3. Your Internet settings are now configured correctly to connect to the XFINITY Internet service. Click Apply Now and you should be able to surf the web, send and receive email, etc.

https://www.xfinity.com/support/internet/set-up-xfinity-internet-on-mac-os-x/NOTE: Not using MAC OS, but that link talks about the PPoE "settings".

My Netduma is PPPoE Disabled, Wan IP Disabled, WAN MAC Address Disabled, WAN VLAN Disabled, IPv6 Enables, MTU Enabled Auto. I assume these are the defaults as I factory reset the Netduma.

NOTE: I have a second router (but was trying to hook it up direct to modem before) and when the Netduma is plugged into it, I have a solid green light, but the router doesn't even read it. The Netduma doesn't even show up on the IP list of connected devices.

Alright so I'm the Comcast guy around these parts lol

First, what modem do you have?

First, what modem do you have?

I don't use a Comcast modem, but this is my setup.

Modem: Zoom Cable Modem 3.0 Series 1094

Router: NetGear Nighthawk AC1900 (R7000)

Previous working setup:

Modem>Nighthawk>Netduma>PS4 and Xbox One

Nighthawk had Netduma static IP address and in DMZ zone.

Netduma had access through WAN option checked, so I could access it from my PC via the static IP address.

When I hooked it back up last night, I hadn't changed any of those settings. I have since wiped all settings from the Nighthawk, starting from scratch.

I have tried: Modem>Netduma and the original Modem>Nighthawk>Netduma

Again all I can access is the Netduma interface via wifi from a computer device. There is no internet access, no matter what setup, but I can mess with the Netduma settings.

NOTES:

When I go to the Netduma Misc. page, it says error loading page, post in forums. (To my best memory all the settings do load on the page, but I dunno.)

I have tried multiple cables.

When trying through the Nighthawk the netduma does not show up as a connected device.

My Netduma firmware is: R1 debug version 1.03.6G running on rb-951g-2hnd.

I have not been able to access the Netduma interface via a wired connection. On any port.

I have since, factory resetting the Netduma, checked the Access through WAN option in the Misc. page, but with the error that loads, I dunno if this is not working.

All the lights seem to be functioning on the netduma and it doesn't reset itself or beep.

I can't think of anything else.

Reset the Netduma, hold the reset button on it for a few seconds until you see the lights change. Or since you can access it via wifi, reset it from misc settings.

Plug the Netduma directly into your modem...

Wait until the Netduma is completely on, unplug the power on your modem for 10 seconds, plug it back in. Wait for it to turn on.

At this point you should have internet access on your wired and wireless devices.

If not, make sure that your devices are setup to be automatically configured for their IP addresses.

Sometimes a simple reboot will help them get a new IP since the IP of the Netduma changes from 192.168.1.x to 192.168.88.x

Post back and let me know how that works.

No dice.

So I have just gone Modem>PC to see if something is wrong there.

I have internet just fine on my PC. Looks good from this end.

Modem and Router check out, to the best I can tell.

On the Netduma Device Manager, do you see a blue box with your WAN IP beneath? If you can't see this go to Settings > WAN and make sure static is disabled.

Then turn off the R1 and turn off your ISP hub. Wait 10 seconds then turn on your ISP hub. Wait 30 seconds then turn on the R1. If you then wire into a PC, do you have Internet access?

I don't. It was already disabled.

Did I do something wrong? I was just replying to what Netduma Jack suggested.

Nope you're fine...

Also the Netduma isn't getting an IP assigned to it from my Nighthawk either.

It IS possible that the WAN port is fried, but again from only being unplugged and not used it's unlikely... The only time I've ever seen that happen was from your stuff being on and in use when there was a lightning strike on your house. (yes it's happened multiple times to me)

If nobody else has any other ideas, the last resort for me would be to try reinstalling the firmware? It seems like you've tried everything I could think of.

Modem>Nighthawk>Netduma

Nighthawk Ethernet Port 4> Netduma Ethernet Port 1

Status lights, but as you can see the Nighthawk doesn't see it. (Again when I wired my PC to any port on the Netduma I couldn't get into the console, just wireless.)

And yes I name all the stuff on my home network. :)

No lightning strikes here. (Thankfully.)

I was looking at Firmware earlier to see if there is an update. I seem to be on the latest, but would be happy to try.

I've had it happen before where my Asus router wouldn't hand the R1 an IP address... I had to restart it like 20 times before it worked. But this is different since you can't get any wired connections at all.

Like I said, if you have a wireless PC in which you can reinstall the firmware somehow then I'd do that and hope for the best as it seems to be the last resort. Otherwise you have a brick lol

It is odd that the Nighthawk gives the Netduma's 4th port a solid white light. That means it is connected and giving internet, but the Netduma has nothing going on. It seems like they ARE talking to each other, but ???

How do I reinstall firmware? Is there a link with info?

That just means there is a link, kinda like a light switch being on or off. Doesn't mean any data is being sent.

I sent you a PM

Firmware install (Ignoring installed version) did nothing. Again with unchecking Preserve Settings did nothing.

Pretty much did all the hookup and reset and power cycles options all over again, but nada.

Do I have any repair or replacement options? I think we are to that point?

So after all of that, I am wondering if I am using the wrong power adapter...

I was putting the netduma away and the one I have plugged in outputs at 12v.

I had cats attack a bunch of cables in my house not too long ago. I am wondering if the netduma's was a casualty of war.

Edit: I looked at a bunch of unboxing videos, I believe I have the correct adapter. All the specs were the same as another USA adapter that had a good shot of the adapter.

Input 100-240v ~ 50/60Hz max 0.3A

Output 12.0V 1.0A

If not the case, does anyone have a link?
