Cable Modem->R1...internet is dropping

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone!  It's been a while since I've been on the forums. Had to take a break from the COD machine. I've made some changes to my setup and could use some help.

I'm pretty experienced with networking and believe I've got everything set up optimally.  My speeds/pings all check out. I've got some ping spiking issues but that's a forever problem with internet in CO.  Anyway, I recently ditched the comcast cable modem/router (gateway) and purchased a TP Link modem. Everything is running through the Net Duma now.

I've got the R1 in the basement (It's unfinished and there's nothing else down there. The house is all wired with Cat 5e) and I'm using a TP link wifi extender for coverage upstairs. I've run the wifi analyzer and I believe that setting is optimal.  I've experienced the Wifi dropping out and I've read the threads on that...I've applied the fix with workaround ticked and unticked.  I still get the random drops.  It doesn't seem to matter the device, whether its mobile/tab/or PC.

It looks like my issue is more than wifi.  I'm currently hardwired into the Duma on my PC and have been for the last day or two.  I'm still experiencing the issue while hardwired.  To clarify, the internet will suddenly stop.  It comes back pretty quickly.  But the internet just goes away completely.  I've rebooted both modem and R1 multiple times and the problem returns. I really notice it when gaming (Kings Road is pretty fun!) but it comes up when streaming as well.  I'm considering a factory reset.  Not sure if that will solve the issue.

I've got a number of variables to consider. I've checked for overheating on both devices; but there are no physical indications that overheating is the issue. It could be a faulty modem...But I feel like I've had the issue in the past. I eventually got the to the point where I just used the comcast gateway for all wifi/hardwire connections. I put the duma in the DMZ and ran all my gaming stuff through the R1 and didn't use the R1's  wifi at all.  I found this to be the simplest solution at the time.  But I got tired of spending the $10/mo equipment rental fee so here I am.

Thoughts?  Should I do a reset? Reload the firmware? I've got an ASUS N900 running Tomato by Shibby firmware that I used before I bought the R1. Should I just hook that up, put the R1 in the DMZ and keep it as I had it before?  I suppose that would eliminate a variable.  Will the update that's coming make any difference?

Sorry for the long winded post.  Just trying to be efficient by giving as much info as possible...

Hey, thanks for giving loads of information, we should be able to get to the root of the problem pretty quickly. I believe you should try a factory reset, though we've really got to narrow it down. Switching out the modem would be a great way to do just that, so I'd recommend switching to your ASUS and doing some tests. Just to clarify, did this problem begin once you started using the TP Link modem? Have you been using the Netduma up until you changed the set-up with no issues? When a device is hardwired to just that TP Link, does the Internet drop out then? How about wireless?

A little more info...

I verified with comcast that the signal has been coming in uninterrupted.

Further, I noticed a post about texts not coming through.  Fraser suggested the poster untick turbo mode and change to the preemtive algo.  I haven't had a drop since then.  I've also seen an improvement in overall performance.  I also haven't had a drop since I made this change.  It's only been about 15 hours or so.  But the drops were happening much more frequently.  Could be coincidence...

The problem with this solution is that I'm only getting 50mbps down when I should be getting 200.

I can do further testing with the modem; but that will take time. My hope is that the info above may provide some time saving insight to you guys.

OK, I've tried the above.  Drops occur regardless of settings.  Over last 24 hours the signal drops about every 45 minutes or so.  I've tried various combos of reboots.  It appears that only the reboot of the R1 is necessary.  Should I do a factory reset at this point?
