Router help, complete technology noob

Recommended Posts

I have a Asus laptop. I never use it really. It old and slow but it gets the job done when I need to do something. I bought this gaming router only for gaming and nothing more. I want all the power going towards the Xbox one. But I'm having trouble knowing what percentages I should use for download cap and upload cap. There's also the option of preemptive and reactive. When I click reactive and do speed test.net I get 32ms ping and download get 4.27 and upload get 0.24

For preemptive 34 ms download 2.58 and upload 0.31

Preemptive or reactive?

Hi and welcome to the forum,

As a basis to start with, what speeds are you paying for? As these are the speeds you need to put in your bandwith.

As stated by nfxcr3w depending on what sped you have can determine if you use preemptive or reactive algorithm. However it can also be what works best for you and your set up.

It can take a bit of experimenting to get the correct settings, and of course it can vary with different games, have a look at the wiki pages as there is a lot of good information contained there.

Also you have the forum, and the admins will help, but they expect you to have at least checked on the wiki pages :)

Hope this has helped :)

Set upload and download % to 100% and do a speed test. Input these as your speeds. Then as a starting point set them to 70% each way and see how you go.

As the guys above have said there is a lot of info in the wiki and reactive is for really high speeds.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

For your speeds do this:

Preemptive Algorithm
100% anti-flood
Share excess enabled
Reset device prioritisation & apply
Do a wired speed test from a PC

Once you know your full speeds you can input them into the set bandwidth section. It sounds like your physical setup may mean you're not making use of congestion control - at your speeds I would seriously recommend connecting all devices to the R1 in order to use it. What is your physical setup? Modem > router > R1 for example?
