procreate
so i have just about everything named that i am aware of on my network but nameless devices can be more difficult to track down. both my PS4 and PS3 came up as such but was able to figure out which was which as i staggered their power state when setting up the devices on the manager. however, i have a new nameless device that i have no idea where it is coming from. i blocked it... until now which i just deleted it. it said [active: dormant] which i am assuming means its powered down/not connected currently but has been connected? i also have another device which i THOUGHT was my phone, but is now saying its a active wired connection. actually i just checked my phone and the IP matches, but it definitely isnt wired. thoughts about this as well? Netduma Staff Netduma Crossy Posted May 5, 2015 Netduma Staff Share Posted May 5, 2015 Can't you just match the IPs on the devices to the IPs on the device manager? On the device manager diagram, does your phone have a dotted or continues line?
Administrators Netduma Iain Posted May 5, 2015 Administrators Share Posted May 5, 2015 Detecting if something is wired or not is a little more difficult than first meets the eye. So the device manager is a best effort attempt at guessing. I use the network monitor to identify devices. Just stream a youtube video and you'll see its bandwidth usage go up. Thats a very clever way of doing it Never though of that!

Could it be a power line adapter, Wifi signal booster, printer or something like that?
PharmDawgg
I know my Asus router lists devices as well and it sometimes helps me figure out what they are. My Asus is setup as an access point.
Administrators Netduma Iain Posted May 10, 2015 Administrators Share Posted May 10, 2015 Good luck. The easiest way is to go to DHCP lease page. Then get the MAC address of the unkown device and look up the OUI MAC on google. It will tell you the manufacturer of the devices network card
