Let me just state that before the DUMA, using my Nighthawk router I frequently had good online gaming, not the greatest but pretty good. My biggest issue was connecting with players really far away geographically. Ok, I have done a lot of research online, in this forum, and the Netduma wiki. I attempted to work out my issue before asking a million questions. My online BO3 (xbox one) experience since using the Duma is bad........Every lobby I join is very laggy, I can notice it amediately, I will be sprinting and about every 8 feet I stop moving for a second and other players are doing the same. They glith form one spot to another. When I look at the ping in game (BO3 ping meter) It is a roller coaster, going from 17ms to 150ms. Before the DUMA, using my Nighthawk I would see a 17ms -33ms ping, almost never over 33ms. Post Duma it seems there is almost always a player with 1 red bar in the game.

I am really frustrated and just want to know if there is something I am missing??? Here is my current set up:

  • Light Speed ISP - fiber optic 1gig up/down - (with my nighthawk router testing on speedtest.net I normally pull 800mb down/up.)
  • Duma is connected directly to the modem > Xbox one and Nighthawk Router are connected directly to the Duma with Cat6 > all other devices in the house hold are connected to the Nighthawk (Nighthawk running in AP mode)

I first set it up as it is explained in the wiki guide:

  • Selected Super-turbo mode
  • My NAT is OPEN
  • Host Filtering is enabled
  • Selected my home
  • Double clicked the button twice for optimal distance
  • Set ping assist to 50 with strict mode enabled
  • My ping Diagnosis on the Duma is - "Exceptional" Zero packet loss, 16.2ms/16.4ms/16.7ms

With these setting my gaming experience is as stated above, not good. I have tweaked the geo- filter, home location, and ping assist to all sorts of variations and still the same results. I also get slower speeds with the Duma = 500mb down / 600mb up and with the Nighthawk I would get about 800mb up/down, I am not concerned about the speed loss, I would sacrifice a ton of bandwidth in turn for a better gaming experience!

I read in the forums about Buffer bloat and tested it with the settings listed above. My buffer is a C. I cant play with the congestion control is Super Turbo mode so I change it to Turbo mode, In Turbo mode I test my speeds at dslreports and they are even slower now, about 120mb down and 150mb up, I adjust my band width accordingly, drop the caps to 95% , run the test again and get a A on the buffer rating, the buffer meter stays in the green for the whole test, I am happy right? Nope ...........still the same performance online!!!!!

What can I do??/ What am I missing????  Please help!!!

Thank You

What modem are you using?

I would personally go back to having the Nighthawk attached to your modem and turn on it's QOS feature to achieve a good bufferbloat grade.

Then put the Netduma in it's DMZ.

Factory Reset the Netduma and set it up according to this Wiki, http://wiki.netduma.com/doku.php?id=setup_gt_120&s[]=speed

Make sure Turbo is ticked and you are using Reactive.

Put the xbox in the Hyperlane.

Try different geo settings to find a good game.

If you are having problems with 'shooting first but dying first', start throttling your xbox via the congestion controls in the Netduma.

BO3 lag comp looks at your Bandwidth not your ping. Don't ask me why. It's ass-backwards but I've proven it by testing with the Netduma congestion control.

Also, this is all based on the fact that your Netduma is on the latest update 1.03.6g.

Good luck.

Sounds like a good idea! Unfortunately my xbone just died last night, black screen of death, so I will have to wait till it gets repaired to try this, FML!!!!!

Did you try these steps from Microsoft to fix it:

Sure did, tried all of the fixes. Thanks for asking though.

Well that blows.

Hope they fix it quick. Mine was out almost a month for a repair.

Quick question, won't I still have buffer bloat from the Duma if I set it up as you suggested?

You will have bufferbloat but you can use the Nighthawk's Qos to get it under control.

I can get an A+ using that configuration with my Asus RT-AC87U.

I enabled the Qos on the Nighthawk for Upload and I am getting a A on Bufferbloat but the download I am still getting a lot of bloat. I am not sure how to adjust the speed on the download? Any ideas?

Download is hard to achieve because only the ISP can solve that. They are the ones sending you information so the buffer is on their end.

The most you can do is lower your download bandwidth til you're happy with the result without losing too much bandwidth.

  • 2 weeks later...

Keep us updated on how you're finding your game experience as I'll have some other ideas :)

I have been running the Nighthawk as my  my primary router and the only thing connected to the Duma is my xbox. I unticked the Turbo and Super Turbo and my speeds are much slower obviously but I can use congestion control. I have the geo filter set at 800km with no ping assist. I have been running it like this for about 2 weeks now. The quality is fairly consistent but the connections dont seem to be that good, probably about the same as just using the nighthawk but slightly better because I am playing with people closer to me. I wish there were congestion control in super turbo mode. Any ideas that I can try??  I know every game isnt going to be great but I dont seem to even get an occasional game with great connections.

You can use congestion control with turbo mode just not super turbo mode. However, you won't be able to make use of congestion control as not all devices are connected to the duma which is why you're not eliminating any local congestions hence why it may not be as good as it should be.

So is your suggestion to use Turbo mode?? local congestion is not an issue, I have 1 gig internet and get the same results when I am the only one using my local network. I normally play when everyone else is sleeping. Last night I turned on the Super Turbo mode and played a while and it was pretty much the same.

If you want to use congestion control yes but you'd need to connect all devices to the duma in order to do so.

You can still suffer from congestion on with those high speeds, phones updating in the background etc.

Congestion control won't work correctly for you either way until everything is connected to it.

What's your typical ping to a game as shown by the duma?
