AmroK86 Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 Hi guys, I've looked at all the available topics regarding the Advanced VPN configurations but I have not managed to get my router to connect to the VPN. I've seen others post their VPN config here, but I'm hesitant to do that. Is there anyone specific I can chat to or share my settings with? Thanks in advance, Amro
AmroK86 Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 Hello Asentrix, I used Express VPN's config file and it worked great, I tried AirVPN and PrivateInternetAccess, and I just cant get it to connect. I believe the structure of the config file I'm providing is incorrect, and I did compare it to the Express VPN one, but I cant figure out how the differences impact the configuration.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted February 8, 2016 Administrators Posted February 8, 2016 If Asentrix is not able to assist you can send me a PM with the config and I can take a look (I have a lot of PMs so may be slower to respond)
AmroK86 Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 Thanks Fraser. If Asentix does not respond tonight i'll drop you a PM

AmroK86 Posted February 9, 2016 Author Posted February 9, 2016 Thank you Crossy for the help! Managed to get PIA to work, and now only AirVPN left. Any ideas? Reason I'm trying them all is because I have a 50mb down 8mb up connection at home, and on both PIA and Express VPN, my down/up speed drop down to 2/2 when using the VPN. From what I've read here on the forums and what I understand, a drop in down/up speeds is expected, but not to that extent. Is that correct?

AmroK86 Posted February 9, 2016 Author Posted February 9, 2016 OK, so after a few more tries and with Crossy's help (THANK YOU) I managed to get all VPN services to work. Air VPN gave me the best speeds so I thought I'll share the results with you guys and see if anyone can help! When I connected to the same server (Caph) through the AirVPN client on my PC, the speeds are very close to what my actual ISP down/up services are. Through the router however, I'm getting about 10% of my actual speed, which I really don't understand. Would this be a NetDuma hardware issue or a config issue? Any help from the community would be appreciated guys! VPN connected through Router: VPN connected through PC Client: No VPN - ISP service:
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted February 10, 2016 Administrators Posted February 10, 2016 There is a limitation with it being around ~10mbps when applied on the router. This should be plenty for anything you're using the VPN for.
soakes76 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Hi AmroK86 I had exactly the same issue and like you, Crossy sent me the PIA config files which worked a treat. You will always get a bigger drop in performance by using a VPN directly in any router rather than a VPN Client on the PC, not just the Duma. My usual speeds are 37/9 and are similar when using the PIA client on my pc. Now I have it setup in my Duma my speeds are 8/8, download affected but upload not? With this I am fine as we can prioritize our devices in the Duma in the event you want a specific device to have a little bit more speed. Everything on my network runs behind the VPN except for my Xbox which also helps in the event on a DDos attack as you are running the Xbox on a different IP and you get the full speeds of your internet capabilities. Hope this helps.
AmroK86 Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Thanks gents, I understand that there will be a hit on speeds, but are you saying that I should just accept the 90% drop in download traffic? Or is there anything I can do to improve the current 3mbps I'm currently seeing?? I'll be more than happy with download speeds of 7 or 8mbps.

AmroK86 Posted February 16, 2016 Author Posted February 16, 2016 Hi guys, sorry for the late reply. Yes I'm on the latest version. Shall I assume that the processing power of the router is being fully consumed at this stage and therefore only providing me with 3mpbs down/up?
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted February 16, 2016 Administrators Posted February 16, 2016 It should be able to reach ~10mbps, if not it could be the specific server you're connected to. Un tick deep packet processing in misc settings and see if that helps.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted February 17, 2016 Administrators Posted February 17, 2016 Hi the vpn really help for lag or no It will increase lag. If you absolutely have to use it for something like gaming where low latency is critical then: Get a specialised gaming VPN. Choose a server as close to your location as possible.
