(R1 DumaOs) it would only open up extra ports for you, that is basically what a switch does. You can get 2 types, managed and unmanaged. Managed switches can be accessed via a gui such as the netgear s8000 which I have and you can prioritise ports and also limit bandwidth to a port, where as an unmanaged switch is just connect and forget.
