PS4 Controller Lag & Hori FPS+

After reading the wiki on lag and the bit about wirelss controllers:…

I don’t know how much lag the wireless on the Official Dual-Shock 4 controller introduces. (Are there figures somewhere?) But the general consensus is that a wired controller is always better.

I am currently using the wired Hori FPS+ controller for COD on PS4

There are a few wonderful things about this controller:

It is wired. I love wired.  I happy that my balls are not being fried while I play. I’m happy that my game is not going to get interrupted cos my controller died. I’m happy that it is more responsive and must be reducing my lag even if by a few ms. And I don’t have to keep charging it.

The sticks are in the xbox style layout. I don’t care what anyone says the fact is that PS controller sucks hard.  The stick positions force your thumbs downwards into a stressed position that becomes very uncomfortable after a while. The xbox higher left thumb position eases that strain.

Triggers have been replaced by pressure sensitive buttons. Reducing the need to travel the trigger.  That has to reduce reaction time by another few ms.

You can remap all buttons directly from the joystick on the fly.   I use bumper aiming shooting and trigger jumping boosting.  This allows my thumbs to remain on the sticks at all time.  This was totally necessary for Advanced Warfare for the boosting and double jumping allowing you to maintain full aiming control while performing aerial antics. Anyone who didn’t remap to similar controls was at a severe disadvantage in Advanced Warfare.  This is not so much required in Black Ops 3 as boots on ground most of the time but it is still handy.  And yes I know you can customise controls from PS4 but that way of custom mapping messes the whole system and is possibly a bit laggy.

Anyway there you go.

Hori is a name I am not familiar with in the controller market, so I appreciate the post, thank you!

Would you mind posting a couple of photos of yours sometime?  Is there a US based operation that sells them (besides a box store like Amazon), or is strictly an overseas build and "find it's way to market" by way of Ebay on other sites?

Interesting read.  I am going to do some reading on them for my personal knowledge base.

Thanks,

JD

What! Hori is massive! Japanese company. Mainly in the 3rd party and custom fighter sticks and buttons market but also joypads recently. When i got mine it was japanese import only. But u can now get them all over the place possibly still import though.

You wont be swooning over it like a custom Scuff, they are ugly plasticy looking things but they perform well.

Also make sure its the plus version.

Jusy randomly picking a review vid on u tube...

Follow up:

I did some reading and decided to order one and give it a try.  Found it for like $43 on Ebay, so I am going to take it apart and see if I can add a couple of under buttons, Scuf stylez, and build up a controller.

I've tried Scuf and Battle Beaver, both have pluses and minuses, but I am looking for more of a controller that was built for bigger hands.

more to follow.....

Keep me posted on how that goes for you JD as I'm curious as to how this controller holds up.

Will do big guy.  I'm thinking I am going to tear into it and see what makes it tick, then look at some mods.  The controller is pretty cheap by comparison ($40/US), so I can sacrifice one to the R&D Gods and still be ahead of the game if it works out.

I'll post updates as I go.

Sound like an awesome plan.

There is already an additional button on the underneath of the controller (designed to reduce sensitivity for scoping or something but you can map it to whatever you like). However it is horribly small and awkward to use if, like me, you keep your indexes and middles on the shoulders and triggers respectively. It would be great to have a scuff style paddle there instead. I would use for crouch/slide!

One thing I don’t like is that the shoulder and trigger buttons are designed as pressure sensitive buttons to retain the features of the dualshock4. This caused me a little confusion at first as I didn’t realise why I was skipping out of ads or stoping shooting. It is not at all a problem once you realise but IMO for FPSs (only)  it would be much better if those buttons were pure digital. As the analogue feature is so rearly used.

Anyway cant wait to see what monster you create.......

@ JD yeah for sure build a beast and we'll jump on and give it a run and see how it holds up... :D

Hell, if this works, I am going all in on the "Gorilla Certified Rage-Master 6000" and going to start producing impact resistant rage controllers for guys like us....LOL

Are you able to apply "turbo mode" to the triggers too? Or does turbo only apply to the buttons

You can apply turbo to any button(s) you like including triggers.  And you can have it on when pressed only, or on when not pressed only, or on all the time.

However it doesn't register in CoD in pressed only mode. other modes work ok in COd but obviously impractical.  I don't know about other games.  I think the CoD devs have code that identifies a turbo mode and ignores it.  So you wont be raising hell with the Shiva if that's what  you were thinking! ;)

Yeah, not so much interested in any scripts or turbo anything on my end.

My vision is one of a larger controller, for us big hand knuckled daggers, but with crisp activation triggers like the BBC offers and maybe some tunability.

We'll see in the coming weeks. The controller has been shipped.
