Please explain how it works and what is happening

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I received my Netduma yesterday and was having a play last night, not really to much success.

I have a friend who lives on the same street, he has Virgin broadband with 162Mbps down, 12Mbps up, plenty to host a decent game. I get around 25ms on a ping test and on Xbox his NAT is open.

So on Netduma Geo-Filter I have my home set right on him with radius as low as possible, I see his red dashed circle, as I've set his quality to 100% and added him to Allow.

Settings:

Strict = On

Distance = 111km

Ping Assist = 50ms

We are playing Halo MCC and never get a game.

I understood Netduma to help me get a good host, I have one, my friend, it should not affect anything else within matchmaking should it..?

But no one joins, I don't believe there is no one in the world searching for a game, and I also don't believe that everyone who is searching, is using a similar geo-filter.

Please can someone explain what is happening.

Thank you.

I don't think it really works like that. The router isn't designed to specifically choose who the host is but to make sure the host you do get has a relatively low ping. I would suggest enlarging the GeoFilter to about 1000km and then searching for a game. Your friend probably won't be host but you will connect to a host that has a low ping as they are within the 1000km :)

Reading this might help.

This is what I can't understand, you say Netduma "makes sure that host I get has a relatively low ping", I have it set to 50ms, I get around 25ms on a test, so there is my host with low ping, and he's within my radius so surely that's job done..?

Are you saying that the 50ms I set isn't just referring to the host, it is also limiting me to 50ms for every player in the game..? If so I can put my ping on 300ms, with small radius to ensure I still get my friends host...

Thank you for link, I have actually already read this.

I think what actually happens is Netduma searches for the amount of players I need to fill my game, looking within my radius and my ping limit. Once it has all the players it then decides amongst those who is the best host..?

I appreciate it should still be nice smooth game, but ultimately I was hoping Netduma would guarantee one of my friends host, as this still is the biggest advantage.

Thank you for your response again and time.

111km is crazy small geo , for a game with that lower player base you will have to stretch it way out into Europe.

You have to have the geo covering where the hosts will be.

Thanks for your reply.

You say "host(s)"..? I know where my host is, he's within my radius down the street.

I think I've misunderstood how Netduma works, I think actually all the players that join the game need to be within your radius, not just the host..?

The person with the netduma must host the party lobby or the geo will not search for matches, your friend will search then you will get kicked because he searches the world while you are set to only 111k.

You have to be the host of the party now this does not mean you will host the match, the match making needs to search for matches and with that game having such low numbers playing you will need a quite wide geo-filter.

The ping assist is for outside the geo, so if a host is at or under the amount you state it can choose outside the filter if there is no games within the filter.

The Netduma doesn't actually search for the people in your game. The game matchmaking does that and then the Netduma just blocks the bad ones. Your friend will only be host if the game chooses him to be host but that might not happen. If you make your GeoFilter a bit bigger, you will can still get a host with low ping and it will play just as good :)
