Strict NAT Type in Warzone / COD since a short while

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I have had the Netduma R2 for about 18 months now and it worked fine for a while. However, I now get a strict NAT suddenly not allowing me to connect to my friends party and party chat.

I can play, but that's not the point. Here's what I've done so far.

  • Disabled IPv6 in the Netduma
  • Disabled UpNP in my modem / IPS Router
  • Set a Static / reserverd IP for the R2 in my modem ISP/Router
  • Put the R2 in the DMZ in my Modem ISP Router

I have kept UpNp on in the R2. /

I did not put the PS5 in the DMZ in the R2 (should i Do that? I don't think so?)

Any help is very welcome. I've tried several Hybrid VPN areas, but they always give strict. It used to be Open in the Cod menu and type 2 in de PS5 menu.

I got it to work once this week. I don't know what triggered that. That was before I tried the things above.

What I do see which is maybe something is that the last four numbers of the IP addresses are the same in the picture where it did work. Might be a coincidence? Might not. I never changed any settings before and it always used to work.

Whenever I rebooted to go to another area I never got it to work again. Maybe there is something to deduct from there.

Thanks!

  • You won't get an Open NAT using HybridVPN
  • Have you made any port forwarding rules on the R2?
  • Putting the PS5 in the DMZ would probably open the NAT
  • I'd suggest removing the images as your public IP is shown
  • Does the PS5 still show NAT Type 2 when CoD shows strict?
  • Disable the Geo-Filter then reboot the game/console, does it show open in the game then without putting the console in the DMZ?

Thanks Fraser. I've deleted the pictures. Can someone do something with my IP then?

I will try this tomorrow. The geo filter is off as this won't work together with the vpn.

I did get an open Nat with the vpn though this week and before....

Yes and no, just best to keep your public IP private where possible.

If it's a gaming VPN maybe you can get an Open NAT but unlikely, otherwise the VPN wouldn't have been applying to the whole device.

Are all devices connected to the R2 or do you have some still connected to the ISP router?

No just the ps5

Okay well no harm probably then.

I put the ps5 in DMZ and got it to work twice with open Nat. It's very finicky. Sometimes it works when I keep enabling and disabling without rebooting. It seems to revert after every reboot or PS5 restart.

It's express VPN

Will keep you updated.

In DHCP set the PS5 to have a reserved IP, then put it in the DMZ and it should persist after reboots

Yes I've put the ps5 in the dmz in the r2. Will check today if it persists.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have the same problem with hybrid VPN, it puts the PS5 and BO6 in NAT 3 or strict when the VPN is active on the NetdumaR3. On the other hand, if I deactivate the VPN, I go back to open NAT, on PS5 and on BO6. Apparently, the OpenVPN of most of my VPNs do not allow you to play in open NAT. (I tested Norvpn, mullvad, ...) if anyone has a solution to have the VPN in open NAT on netduma, I'm interested?

You can't get an OpenNAT through a VPN generally, perhaps a specific gaming VPN might allow you to but the general rule is you don't get open when using a VPN

But I did have open at the beginning of using the vpn. Also I have open sporadically, so that's not true. Also other VPNs have at least moderate.

But, I've tested it the last week and it does not seem to influence matchmaking or connecting to party and friends so I guess it's not an issue.

It also does not affect ping times. Hope this helps.

Edit: some VPNs

Moderate is possible yes but Open generally is a no, if it's not affecting ping times and you're not using a close server then you've not applied the VPN to the entirety of the device

What I mean is that the ping times are not too worse. They are a bit affected, but not to the point it's unplayable. It does say connected and in game it says connected to a different region. So I'm guessing it's just connected is it not?

It is strict yes, but I've had open before. You're saying it wasn't properly connected than. But it is now?

Sounds connected now yes, really only a few scenarios:

  1. How you setup the VPN (the rules for HVPN) weren't setup in a way that the VPN was covering everything properly or covering specific ports that excluded the NAT testing ports
  2. The VPN itself is quite open with ports that would allow you an open NAT. This is more unlikely given people use VPNs to be more secure so them being more free with ports isn't in line with being secure
  3. Perhaps its a gaming VPN where security isn't really a focus so they can be more free with ports

It shows me which ports and also it has a dedicated call of duty port forwarding. It's express VPN. I'm gonna tinker with Surfshark this week. It supposedly possible to give you moderate and better lobbies.

But I feel it works now. Although the strength of the lobbies aren't really changing that much but that maybe just be the game.

Okay that makes sense if they actually allow you to open ports for the VPN, cool feature! It is worth keeping in mind that CoD are taking steps to counteract VPNs, this is likely more of a concern if you're using servers far away so you may not be affected, just something to be aware of.

Yes I know, I do think it's more of a problem on pc because of the detection possibilities. With all the hacking going on I doubt it's a priority. However I do know yes, 😜
