Hybrid VPN Add Service Manually for Netflix

Recommended Posts

Hello!

So today I configured Express VPN to work via Hybrid VPN on my Nighthawk XR500 Router and so far it is working fine on my LG OLED TV, without any services added. I'd like to use the VPN only for the Netflix TV App tho and not for the whole TV. Is it possible to set that up?

If I use "Add service" on the Netduma "Hybrid VPN" Configuration and select the "Netflix" preset and select the option to only use VPN for that service, Netflix on my TV App doesn't recognize the VPN anymore. So I thaught maybe I would need to add Netflix manually as a service, is that possible? If so, how do I add the Netflix Ports correctly?

Hi!

That‘s the part that is confusing me. How do I set those rules up in the „Hybrid VPN“ section?

If I click on „Add Services“ to add a service manually, I can add ports, I see that, but I don‘t understand exactly how to add them. Cause it says something along the line of „Start Port“ and „End Port“ and „Source Port“ and „Destination Port“. I don‘t understand that.

I added the ports like that (I don't know if I did it correctly) but the VPN isn't recognizing Netflix on my TV with these settings anymore. So it's not working. If I remove the ports and just let the whole TV work with the VPN, then it works, so the VPN is working. The issue must be related to a configuration in here I guess.

As you only have 2 ports & 2 rules to make it's super simple - whatever rule you're making at the time just put the same number in each box e.g.:

Source
Start - 22 End - 22
Destination
Start - 22 End - 22
Protocol
TCP

Thanks for the reply! I just did that, I added the screenshot above. But unfortunately, the TV and Netflix are not recognizing the VPN anymore with these settings. As a test, I then removed the Port rules I just added from the Hybrid VPN settings and the TV and Netflix are recognizing the VPN again without issues. So the VPN per se is working, I wonder why I can't make it that only Netflix runs with the VPN on my TV tho.

Okay thanks for trying, we'd have to update the service ideally but those routers are not receiving frequent updates now, I think you'll have to add the entire device for the moment. We may be able to get it sorted with a cloud update though

So, today afternoon the VPN suddenly stopped working. When I went to check in the router settings, the status of the connection wasn't "connected", but instead it was "failed". I then turned off the Hybrid VPN and turned it back on with the toggle and the VPN was connected again. Is it possible, that there is something wrong with the config file? Could you please check?

It should have the word client at the top but that's obviously not prevented you connecting, other than that it's fine. Are you leaving it on permanently? If so I think you're hitting a timeout which is why it disconnected, someone else had this before and we tried adjusting the timeout in the config but didn't work so not sure if it's on the VPN side or not

You can but we were unable to effect the timeout via the config, I'm not sure the logs would indicate the cause of the timeout or not. If it is on the router side then the XR series aren't getting many updates now so I couldn't say when/if that could be adjusted. If it's on the VPN side, then that'll be a standard for them that prevents their servers from being overwhelmed. Probably the easiest thing to do would be to disable it when you don't need it and re-enable when you do
