D3mon1c
Ok so im still SOMEWHAT lost about how VPN works entirely even though I've looked it up awhile back. So Im aware it can hide your IP address/your able to use the internet I guess w/o your IP provider I guess knowing what you do but is that all? Like apart of me is curious about the gaming aspect of it like if I hid my IP (Or whatever idk the correct terms here since I've nvr had the service b4) in Texas & I connected to a Texas server in a game would I have like 0 lag doing that or would I have the same lag from where I live at to Texas on the matter? Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 8 Administrators Share Posted October 8 You would have a higher ping in that scenario, it might not be much as it's in your area but you're adding an extra hop to the server. VPNs are generally used for privacy reasons and getting around geo restrictions e.g. watching UK Netflix. I wouldn't specifically suggest using it for gaming except in unique cases which I don't think would be applicable to you.
D3mon1c
So if I switch to something thats further off 4rm where Im at I'll get the lag for switching/in game lag distance between me & that specific area I connected to as well on top of it? It doesn't bridge the game & like try to give like 0 lag like I initially thought b4?
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 8 Administrators Share Posted October 8 Correct! No it doesn't bridge the game and give you 0 lag, in 95% of cases you will always have additional latency, the closer the server the less additional ping and the further away the higher. I'm not sure if this analogy works in the US but: Imagine this, you set off from home to go to the supermarket, the time it takes you to get there is 20 minutes and it's 10km away. The distance never changes but there is some fluctuation in the time it takes due to traffic etc but it's 20mins on average. Now imagine someone put a toll booth on your route, the distance to the supermarket hasn't changed but now on your way there you have to queue up at the toll and pay the fee, on the way back you have to do the same. Doing this adds 5 minutes to your overall journey. If you had the option, would you prefer to keep the toll booths and add 5 minutes to your journey every time or would you rather they were removed? A simplistic analogy of what is happening but hopefully it explains it a bit better for you.
D3mon1c
So even with Geo-Filtering it doesn't like make the lag that comes with vpn better?

The Geo-Filter allows you to force the closest server, in that analogy, the Geo-Filter may find you a supermarket just 10 minutes away but you add that toll booth in with the VPN it's still going to add time to your journey.
