SmartBoost not categorising WFH/VPN traffic and other issues

Hi,

Have a new R3 and all working well on the Gaming front. However, I’ve noticed a couple of things with SmartBoost and the Network Activity Monitor:

1. SmartBoost does not categorise the traffic from either my work laptop or my wife’s work laptop, both MS Windows. I use an Enterprise VPN from Cisco and my Wife uses common Google services. ,

2. Network Activity reports data use for my work laptop in realtime but my work laptop shows zero data usage in the hourly/daily usage reports.

3. I have renamed some devices in Device Manager but Network Activity displays the original name for some, but not all, devices.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

  1. That's understandable, you're creating a tunnel between you and work, the router can't detect the traffic properly in this scenario.
  2. Is this on the dashboard or purely on the Network Activity page? Does it work better when not connected to the VPN?
  3. If you go back to the Device Manager did the changed names save or is it showing the old ones as well?

Hi Fraser,

1. VPN is a Smart Boost category so why does it not report as VPN traffic?

2. I’d just assumed it could still measure the VPN packets, they are shown in the live data view. I cant use my work laptop without the VPN, it’s configured that way.

3. Device Manager shows the new names

Thanks,

Stu

It may be your enterprise Cisco VPN isn't covered by the Cisco VPN we have listed. It'll be measuring it but we do know the dashboard for example isn't updating but it's just visual. I wasn't able to reproduce the naming issue, what firmware are you on and are the names alphanumeric? Do you have symbols included etc?

Hi Fraser,

I’m using firmware version v4.0.219

1. VPN is Cisco AnyConnect which uses these port by default.

Cisco AnyConnect VPN typically uses the following network ports:

2. Think i’ve fixed the naming issue. I’d renamed my wife laptop which did contain a hyphen. I noticed that in network activity both the old and the new name were appearing in the list. I looked up the offline devices in Device Manger and deleted the device there which then also removed it from Network Activity.

Thanks,

Stu
