Subnet mask IP Range

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Tried a search and didn't find anything

Came in possession of an XR500 recently, hoping to replace my T-mobile / ASUS router.

  • I wanted my IP range to span 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.254
  • Changed subnet mask to 255.255.254.0
  • Applied, rebooted, IP range still only supports 254 devices

Does the router support ip ranges beyond the final octet?

I can't say for certain, the Settings are NGs domain but I doubt it will work and I've never seen anyone do so either. You'd need to use the two routers I think.

Networking standards for IPv4 don't allow for this. Especially not a home class routers.

Thank you for this info. Based on what you said, I was able to ascertain the XR500 (and many other consumer grade routers) fall under the class C category and only allow subnetting of the last octet?

If the above is correct, can you let me know where I can read more about these networking standards, and if there is a good reference for recommended routers that fall within each class?

On a slightly related note, can the XR500 handle more than 254 active devices at a time (e.g. a home with many IoT devices)?

thank you!!
