R3 + ATT Fiber Setup Suggestions

Recommended Posts

I have been dealing with Xfinity/Comcast cable internet for years and am excited to be upgrading to fiber internet.   The idea of faster speeds and more reliable internet is incredibly exciting. However, I want to ensure that I set it up correctly to fully maximize its potential. With this in mind, I'm reaching out to gather suggestions on the best way to go about this. If anyone already has this setup, have you had any issues or how did you set it up specifically. Thanks for any suggestions and input.

I don't have any specifics on devices yet, but I will sometime tomorrow.

In terms of R3 settings there isn't really anything major you need to change, just remember to adjust the speed on the R3 and enter the R3 in the new modem DMZ if applicable.

I had ATT fiber, using netduma definitely helped my hit detection back in Black ops 4 days. I use to 1v1 my friends in private match. When I was using my ATT fiber gateway directly on my linksys wrt router with openwrt or ddwrt. I used to always shoot first and die first. Even with good bufferbloat settings.

When I started to 1v1 him with my netduma router I performed much better.

Theres 2 things I dislike about ATT fiber is they force you to use their gateway and you will notice you will get double NAT if you decide to use your own router. Their IP pass through sucks. If you do a tracert you will see the gateway ip and your router IP. You will definitely feel the double nat in game but netduma will help it. If you google ATT fiber double nat you will see lots of people complaining about that.

I finally switched from ATT fiber to Google fiber after 5 years. It feels so dang good to plug your router directly into the ONT

@swippurUnfortunately  google  fiber isn't available to me currently but definitely thanks for the info.

If there’s any other fiber provider in your area I would definitely choose them over ATT fiber for gaming. But if ATT fiber is the only provider I would buy a block of static IP addresses from them. This YouTuber recommends it

Is there any negative to having a setup to where the R3 is in "ip passthrough" therefore it is on a separate networks. ATT modem/router (192.168.1.1)/R3 (192.168.77.1) The ATT router/modem doesn't offer a true bridge or dmz mode.  As of right now everything is working fine. No double NAT's or connection issues but I will say I can no longer obtain Ipv6 allocation on the R3 side of things.  I can connect a device to the ATT modem/router, and it will receive an iPv6 address with no problem.

Also, because all my devices are not receiving any iPv6 addresses should I just disable IPv6 WAN and IPv6 LAN on the R3.  Thanks for any suggestions.

That's fine, if the R3 is in the DMZ then it should receive IPv6, if not we are working to improve it - you could then disable it if it's not working for you
