R3 at a glance

So first of all I have to apologize. I received my R3 the other day and just updated and set it up. The box looked amazing so good job on that. The router itself felt kinda cheap and very lightweight, I was a bit worried at first to say the least. After replacing my XR700 and disconnecting my APs I set my new R3 up. I have to say the initial setup wizard is miles faster than the XR700 so that was very refreshing and a bit of a relief from my "cheap" concerns. After getting reasonable Internet speeds and setting up the WiFi I began to test the range in house (it's a rainy day so not gonna venture out to the yard just yet). I have a 2 story home with finished basement. I have the R3 set in the middle of it all next to my modem. This has great range for my home. I have not used this router long maybe about an hour but it seems very responsive and NOT CHEAP lol. I would have 1 suggestion though in settings under WAN where you can set the IPv4 DNS servers, would be nice if you could set IPv6 DNS servers as well. That's really the only gripe I have, this router seems very well made and the software is very intelligent and looks phenomenal, honestly, really great job with the GUI. I'll be sure to post after gaming (PubG, Overwatch 2, Fortnite and whatever else my kids play) with any issues if I even run into any. I do have 1 question about steady ping, is it only applied to devices in Geo or is it system wide?

Just started gaming and setting up devices. I honestly really hate the cap of 4 devices in Geo. As I've stated with the xr700 it's very annoying to have to remove devices to add others just to remove them and add them back over and over. You should be able to add all your gaming devices and whatever is on will be filtered simple as.  If you're really going for a simple setup where most people just set up the R3 and leave it - it would make more sense to remove the cap on allowed devices in Geo so we can just add all our gaming devices to it and let it do it's job when those devices are on.

Disappointing to hear it felt cheap to you, was it just more so because it was light?

Great to hear otherwise you're having a great experience. IPv6 DNS has been requested so likely we'll be adding that in a future update.

I have sent you a PM with an update that would fix a potential issue you might have based on your usage so make sure to upgrade to that prior to gaming

Steady Ping is just for the Geo-Filter

I don't think we thought many people would have more than 4 gaming devices at any one time and that it may also cause the Geo-Filter to become quite messy but it has been requested so we'll look into it.

I mean I get that but looking at it, you can view by device or view them all. We have 4 gaming PCs, 3 PS5s, a Nintendo switch that rarely gets used and an Xbox series X.

Yeah lol I mean most routers I've had have that heavy plastic and just feel bulky like a nice paperweight. When I picked up the R3 to attach the antenna it was like "OMG is this it??" Lol no regrets here bud, the unit seems to be top notch. Just would like to see some subtle changes in the os but other than that I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Another thing in Geo that would be nice is being able to change the selected game for the device. Maybe where it says game selected then have a drop down box so you can change it from there instead of having to delete the device and add it again with another game.

Getting much higher latency in game - usually around 40-50ms was gaming around 60-80ms. Also the server being used was way outside my geofence and was probably the reason for higher latency. Ping assist is set to 40ms and is on strict mode (fast search is not enabled).

This was about the same in OW2 as my latency is usually around 40-50ms and it was in the 60's.  Low 60's mind you like 62-63 and it would go as low as 58 but would fluctuate between 58-63ms.  Need to go hardwire my son's PS5 to a switch so that's all for now.  Hope everyone is well over there!

Also while writing this the Internet went off, not from the ISP but the R3... Should I do a reset after the upgrade? How do we do a hard reset on the R3?

You generally don't need to but could be a good idea to. You can do it from Settings > Troubleshooting or hold the reset button in the back of the router down for 30 seconds

That's been requested as well actually so I've added it to the list.

The higher ping sounds like it is the Steady Ping feature: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IElhhEi70Pg we just released a video explaining this. It can be disabled.

For it going outside the radius try this:

  1. Disable GeoLatency
  2. Disable PingAssist (set it to 0,0)
  3. Enable Strict Mode
  4. Disable Fast Search

Then, restart game or wait 10 minutes (in the lobby in the game) or if that doesn't work, reboot PC/Console and try again please. See if that is more stable for you. We're all good thanks, the team are all off to enjoy their holidays now!

I'm having an issue. The Internet seems to stop working on the hard wire devices. I'm still on the WiFi and able to use the Internet wirelessly (as I'm using it to write on here) but wired devices are losing net. Almost like DHCP wants to stop working as I'm not able to auto obtain an IP.  I've also tried to static an IP to my laptop and still no net hardwired. Any thoughts? I did do a hard reset after updating the firmware to the one you sent. Just some info as I've been reading others with this issue - every one of the ports on the R3 is connected to a switch. Disconnecting from the switches is not an option as they're all over the house to consoles, TVs, PCs, etc. all with cat8 cable. This setup was fine for years with the xr700, now that I have the R3 the only change I've made to the network is taking out the 2 APs since I don't have 6 LAN ports anymore (plus the R3 seems to do just fine handling the wireless needs of the house so far).

Did you set the static IP while it wasn't able to get internet? If so reboot the device, not the router and see if it gets internet then. Also if you could get the logs from Settings > Troubleshooting > Advanced > System Logs that might give us an idea why it happened

Sure can do. Yes I noticed that the PS5 in the living room wasn't getting an IP and thought there was an issue with the actual PlayStation. I went downstairs and noticed my laptop wasn't pulling an IP. I then set it static and still no IP. Funny how nothing hardwired was able to get Internet or pull an IP off the router but everything, literally everything wireless worked just fine. I'll pull those logs now.

Thank you for the logs, seeing a lot of DHCP messages as well as other logs a developer should look at. I have sent you a PM for a new firmware if you could try that please. Then factory reset after, I think if it's still an issue the following should be tried:

  1. Disable IPv6 in WAN/LAN followed by a reboot, if it continues:
  2. Disable DHCP and set reserved IP addresses for devices, if it continues:
  3. Make yourself accessible and I can remote in and enable remote logging which will give us more detailed logs for the team to look into
