Worse jitter with R3 than ISP / XR1000 routers.

Hi! I've received my Netduma R3 router today and it seems to have worse jitter than both my ISP and my XR1000 routers, my base ping fluctuates way more with the R3, which also causes noticable stutters in-game (COD MW3). I've tested pretty much everything that I could think of: disabling SmartBOOST, disabling Steady Ping, resetting router multiple times, factory resetting, and nothing improves that. I've attached some CMD ping tests. First image is ISP router, second image is R3.

How have you setup the ISP modem/router to pass all traffic to the R3? Are ALL devices connected to the R3? If you switch the ethernet cable connecting the R3 to the modem does it improve?

I set the R3 on the ISP router's DMZ and restarted both for everything to apply correctly. And I tested having EVERY device on the house connected to the R3 only and also ONLY my PC and nothing helped. Also tried changing both ethernet cables (the one from ISP router to R3, and the R3 to PC) to completely different cables and that didn't help either.

Try different DNS

Just tested 1.1.1.1 DNS and it seems to be a little bit more stable with the R3 than 8.8.8.8 but still not as stable as with ISP router, and still getting micro stutters in-game. I also changed the PC's DNS when testing. First image is ISP and second is R3.

Did you disable SmartBOOST from the :r3menu fully? As it seems like it could be something like SmartBOOST allocating bandwidth/prioritizing elsewhere resulting in these brief spikes

I just double checked and yes, it's fully disabled.

Could you disable the protection options in Settings > Troubleshooting > Advanced and see if that helps at all as that can drop packets

Just tried it and no difference with the jitter, first image ISP and second R3. Something I noticed on the Advanced Troubleshooting tab is that the R3 seems to cause jitter when the CPU2 is at a high usage, which is basically almost all the time. SmartBOOST is still disabled, and nothing really is going on in my PC regarding internet usage, being the only device at the moment connected to the R3.

Ah, I see you've changed the interval to 1 second, change it back to the default 2.5 I believe and check again, I believe PingPlotter have even said setting it at that value can provide inconsistent results.

My bad, wasn't aware of that. There I did the tests again with 2.5, first image ISP and second image R3. Same thing happens in-game as well if you could use a video of that. When playing only with either the ISP or XR1000 routers my ping doesn't even move at all, with the R3 it fluctuates a little bit, and again those little jitters are noticable in the gameplay. Steady Ping disabled since the added ping feels really bad.

It looks like for the top screenshot it's only the one router being used, then for the R3 there is the additional hop of another router which could be affecting it. If you make the R3 primary and check again do you get the same results?

@m4rc3_AVL

  1. If your testing this I would have congestion control set to always and speed test bypass disabled as to see the data accurately being applied by the QOS.
  2. I can do the testing as well as I own XR1OOO as reference I haven't really seen much of a difference if your looking at QOS algorithms as it identical it might just be your settings as I suggest to be applied.
