It is possible. I tried my Asus mesh nodes with Asus’ app and ended up having to factory reset both my mesh routers because it didn’t take.  I recommend logging into the mesh nodes by way of pc and enabling access point mode. Then connect the wan port of the primary node to a lan port on the R3. Then you should be able to connect the mesh nodes by wirelessly or wired.

I have a similar issue. I have the r3 also and I put asus axe11000 into ap mode but I am getting no connectivity..for the ap.

If its in AP mode there shouldn't be any issues, is the R3 LAN connected to the axe WAN port?

I had to factory reset my GtAx11000pro and RtAx86u and then set them up in in AP mode by connecting an ethernet cord to each one.  After making sure they were in AP mode I then connected the GtAx11000pro (Wan)  to the R3 (Lan).  Then I set the Ax86u into Aimesh node by way of the Asus iphone app.  Then make sure you turn off the wifi on the R3.  I know it is tedious but it works for me currently.
