EAX8- Extender

Recommended Posts

Hello

I have had a xr500.

I just had a baby boy, and with this my parents are helping my wife and I.

They will be living with me during this time, but the wifi range to there room is sloooow.

In my office on my mothers iphone I get about 300-400mbps on ookla speed test. in her room i get 5-10mbps. Not the best for streaming services.

Long story short, is this wifi extender any good with the xr500 AND the dumaOS interface, how to set up in the interface in the QOS ect.

Do I even need this device? Its about 5000SQFT home from one end first floor (xr500 location) to the opposite end 2nd floor(parents room).

I did a speed test throughout the house, the wifi just falls off, one foot infront of there door (SHAME)

Last point, I want zero interference in my gaming realm with no speed falloff ect.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks

Hi and welcome.

The EAX80 is a 8 stream WiFi 6 extender so it should on paper have far better WiFi than the XR500 but a lot depends on how you set it up. If wired up to the XR500 it will be a nice simple access mode and any devices connected to it will show up as wired and very easy to control via QoS.
however it’s WiFi 6 so clients have to support it to see the full benefits.

You could use it as an extender using the backhaul channel so it would need to be located where it keeps good connection rates and the QoS would show it as a client too.

The XR1000 is priced about the same and might just give them enough throughput if they use WiFi 6 clients but if not and you are wiring up you could use the XR500 as an Access Point.

The EAX80 is really meant in extender mode to party up with an AX router but NG do a range of WiFi 5 extenders and power plugs that are cheaper and may be better for short term use.

Thanks for the reply!

I plan on using it/whatever else you guys suggest as an extender and only an extender.

I dont plan on wiring into my xr500, i would plug it in my bedroom or even down the hall closer to my parents where i still get full wifi speeds.

I guess im here for advice on which extender i should get for my xr500 while still using my DumaOS and prioritizing my PC.

Thanks for the help!

I think WiFi 6 is the way to go if say you changed the XR500 in the future however the NG extenders like many that use the backhaul it’s positioning is important. If it’s like my EX8000 then they have very limited control and you might find the EAX80 signal over powers the XR500 ie clients stick to the EAX80. That might not be an issue and it should have transmit power to help roaming to a small degree but it’s very limited that way.

The other issue that may arise is if it’s like my EX8000 to obtain best performance it requires the router to use a DFS channel(I’m U.K.) ie the backhaul channel has more throughput but that may be different on that model you are looking at.

When I used my XR500 with the EX8000 it would show clients connected to the 8000 but the 8000 acts like a client too.

I think some have used Mesh systems on the forum too so might be worth a search.
the cheapest option would be a power line adapter which you could simply setup in their room if it’s just basic needs.
It’s very hard to recommend equipment but I would strongly recommend purchasing from a retailer that offers good return policies like Amazon so whatever route you take if it’s not working as intended you can simply return it.
