Hey everyone,

I'm currently running an A*U* AX88U and although it's ok and is even better with Merlin's FW set to DOCSIS specific WAN packet overheads and using fq_codel I just feel for the money it's a bit, well, meh. The QoS I feel at times is a bit hit and miss. My games can often rubber band/lag despite a manual set up of WAN/ISP allocation speeds (up and down)  to ~10% to 20% lower then the allocated package speeds. Buffer bloat is mostly variable.

So I've decided to go the Duma road and specifically an XR1000 or XR700.

My main query is the power of the triple core processor of the 1000 vs the quad of 700. I don't actually have an AX/WiFi 6 enabled devices bar one wife's Apple iPhone SE and she wouldn't even know what AX/WiFi 6 is 😀 No misogynistic intent BTW. But I do like the look of Duma3.0. I'm not into home networking in a huge way and don't run a NAS or the like, transfer files internally on the home network or the like. I know the 700 is a better choice for this.

In all there's ~ 14 wireless devices connected at any one time (  x3 Ninty Switch, X4 mobile phones, X2 PS4, Firestick etc) and x3 gaming PC, one cat5 straight and 2 home plug/powerline.

So, what's the best option? The more powerful 700 or the less powerful but more future proofed WiFi and OS option the 1000?

Thx

In my personal opinion, if you like the look of DumaOS 3.0 then go for the XR1000 as it is preinstalled right out of the box. Even though you don't have any AX devices you will still benefit from the AX WiFi. Given the amount of devices you have as well and the fact you don't use a NAS etc I think the XR700 would be overkill in your scenario.

Thx for your reply Fraser.

I'm a going off the idea now TBH. I really like the look of  ND 3.0 but Netgear charging for security on their routers is a bit of a p**s take when it comes as standard with most other premium routers.

I've read an early review from Dong Knows and he reckons the triple core is a bit weak and makes the OS slow and sluggish. Which is a shame.

The router still has a built in firewall, you're not required to use Armor at all and everything will still work without it.

I've not had many support queries for the router so far as not many people have it so I couldn't speak to that but we will be providing updates for it of course so if that is identified as an issue we will fix it.

To be fair Dongs review is very early and he does not mention the fact the cpu is 64bit compared to the 32bit systems found on earlier XR routers.
what he fails to mention is slow response would be down to how optimised the software is running the OS and with NG code which I would expect to see a significant improvement as both Netduma and Netgear improve firmware and drivers.
Personally my routers got Armor available and I don’t use it and I agree it should be a free option if you wish to use it as the competition offer that but that’s NG side of things.
As you have the XR700 you are in a good position to watch the forums to see what users have to say and to watch how it pans out.

The charge is for Bitdefender total security really not just the basic router functionality Bitdefender gives you. If you had Android devices and windows devices (and wanted to risk it on a mac) you can download Bitdefender total security for PC's and hand held devices as many times as you want for that price. If you had a big household or a lot of devices that would be worth it rather than buying it for each devices separately, but if not just don't turn it on and you still have all the features security wise of the XR700 and XR500, Netgear have not taken anything away. Also I would say personally that since this router is built off the RAX50 the CPU is a tad weak possibly for DPI work from both Netduma and Bitdefender but time will tell as Netduma and Netgear work on the code. Bitdefender has been seen to slow some routers down but that not does not mean this one will. Just stick with the XR700 if you are unsure its still a great router, and unless you need AX don't worry about upgrading.

Upgrading my internet connection from 200Mb to Gigabit.

Does the 1000 handle gig well?

I use a different AX router at present but the XR1000 should handle your speeds just fine. As Fraser said it also comes with 3.0 installed so that's a plus. It should serve you well for many years I would hope. :)
