Can't get Plex Working (No USBs Show) or Hybrid VPN Working

Recommended Posts

I've just received my XR700 and I've spent hours tonight trying to get it working to no avail. I've tried the following firmware with a factory reset between each one:

XR700-V1.0.1.10
XR700-V1.0.1.20
XR700-V1.0.1.24_beta (current)

Plex

I've tried 3 different USBs and none of them show on Plex. I've tried FAT32, NTFS, different brands, external HDs, USB flash drives.. none of them show up. From my understanding, I need some sort of USB drive to use Plex with a network drive. As no USBs show up, I can't continue with the Plex setup.

Hybrid VPN

I've got an AirVPN subscription and I've had hardly any luck getting this working. When I finally get the VPN to be connected, nothing appears to be going through the VPN. Even if I say only this device should go through the VPN, it doesn't work.

Yet sometimes, when I say "Do not VPN these services", then the VPN seems to be enabled. It just seems to be completely unusable at the moment. I can't get my other Windows machine to work on the VPN no matter what I try configure.

Example log for VPN enabled but not working with the above "Only VPN these services" enabled.

I've also noticed clicking off the VPN page and back on again doesn't often seem to save the devices I've configured on the right to either use or not use the VPN.

Any help to get these issues resolved would be appreciated.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

When you have a USB device connected can you see it in the ReadyShare feature? Only VPN these services means that it will only VPN manual services that you add, as you haven't added anything it isn't applying the VPN. Changing it to Do NOT VPN these services applies the VPN to the whole device minus any particular services you add to not go through it. Does it work then?

Hey Fraser,

Regarding the VPN side of things, I've got it working based on your advice thanks. It did appear to bug out yesterday but factory resetting has fixed that.

As for Plex, I've got it working but there is definitely a bug. The USB is now showing in the ReadyShare feature but it's not showing up under Plex (I haven't changed anything). It's still like this after a restart.

Strangely, Plex is working. Earlier today, Plex did show a USB drive so I got it all setup. It's still working now even with no USB device available (I've got a network drive configured).

Is this some sort of 'Plex'' module one can add to the NewDuma OS?

I ask as I'm having a hell of a time getting and keeping my Plex Media server running from my Synology NAS to 1) reliably pass through my XR500 router to my Roku Box which I use to control/interact with Plex on my TV. and 2) keep Plex connected as every day I swear it craps out and I can't get the Roku to see the NAS anymore. It feels like 30 minutes of Voodoo magic and shaking a dead chicken over the XR500 till I half of the time get it to work, the other 50% I have to conduct breathing exercises to keep from smashing the damn thing.

I love the look of the NetDuma OS but I am really starting to feel it just ain't cutting it with the XR500, I have all sorts of issues where my ole Craptastic 2010 Netgear router worked like a charm with Plex and the Nas all the time.

P.S.

Not trying to crap on the DumaOS, I like it in fact, I'm just perplexed as I feel like router/networking rules that I understood and worked in the past aren't working anymore. Up is Down, Left is Right, Cats and Dogs living together, TOTAL ANARCHY!

Yes, the XR700 has the option to run a Plex media server as an app on the router. I did get it working in the end but decided to build a dedicated server for other purposes which included running Plex.

Not on the XR500 but that's a good idea, I'll add it to the list - may not be possible. In WAN Settings make sure Disable IGMP Proxying is unticked and SIP ALG is ticked, it may not help but that would be my first thought. Could also try disabling QoS fully from the Anti-Bufferbloat menu.

I should have noted in my original post I already did try disabling QOS, one of the first things I tried and it didn't help/change anything.

I'll go check/change the IGMP and SIP setting and report back.
