Running a Speedtest while connected to NetDuma R1 causes modem to crash.

Recommended Posts

When I am connected directly to my Arris 6183 16x4 modem and run a speed test, I achieve 160-180 mpbs over and over. Once I introduce the Netduma R1 into the mix and run a speedtest, even when doing a fresh boot of the cable modem after connecting it, it will put out to around 150-160mbps and then it seems to hit a magic number and my bandwidth on the speed test site as well as the NetDuma network monitor page drops to no usage. After this no matter how many speed tests I initiate, my bandwidth shows 500kbps - 1mbps downstream. I can reset the NetDuma R1 at this time and get around 15mbps downstream but I have to manually boot the cable modem again to get my speed where it should be, until I run the next speedtest and it freezes and drops once more. Its definitely something with the netduma R1 causing this dropoff and I dont know where to start looking. I have turbo mode enabled as well as have tried the super turbo mode that disables Congestion Controls altogether. It just seems something happens with the Netduma and it sees a flood of data and just goes into shutdown mode.

What ISP? There is a known bug with the chipset of the SB6183 and the netduma. The SB6141 is your better option.

Unless your ISP rolled out the firmware update for your modem that allows you to disable the EEE option.

I am with Cox and I own the Cable Modem.

Go into the modem configuration page usually 192.168.100.1 and see if there is an option to disable/enable Energy Efficient Ethernet like below

Any idea what firmware version has that option? Mine is

SB6183-9.2.0.0-GA-04-37-NOSH

And I do not see the option to disable it I am on hold with Cox Tier 2 but If I had a firmware number to give them when they pickup I may have better luck.

Each ISP would have to put out their own firmware, so I do not know the numbers for the newest firmware. Most likely anyone on the phone won't even know what you're talking about. It would have to come from their higher up techs...

The best option right now is to either use a different modem (SB6141) or put another router that doesn't support EEE in between the modem and the duma. Modem>router>Duma and then put the duma in the 1st router's DMZ
