Yes it can and it needs to be connected to a modem/router/ONT/box via ethernet to get internet - it can not do the job of a modem. It won't cause any issues.

I run the R3 by itself.. so are you suggesting I get a modem?

No, you'll have it connected via one of those methods so you're fine, you don't need to do anything
