Camg87
Sorry if this isn't the right place.. Just wondering if anyone can help me understand this. I was with BT for the internet on like 70mbs my ping on fc25 was always around 16. I'm now on virgin media gigabit internet, using the netduma R3 and can't get my ping below 26 and the gameplay feels absolutely awful
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted May 20 Administrators Share Posted May 20 Better internet in terms of higher speed doesn't necessarily guarantee a lower/more stable ping. How have you set the VM hub to ensure all traffic flows to the R3? E.g R3 in its DMZ, modem/bridge mode Are ALL devices connected to the R3? Have you entered your new speeds into the router? How have you setup Congestion Control? How have you setup SmartBOOST? What platform are you playing on and how is it connected, via ethernet or WiFi? How have you setup the Geo-Filter? Camg87
Virgin router is in modem mode. I'm wired from the Duma to the Xbox, anything that could be connected via WiFi is switched off. I don't know what you mean by DMZ mode, could you explain
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted May 20 Administrators Share Posted May 20 You can ignore the DMZ as you're in modem mode, what about everything else?
Camg87
I've tried smartboost, it makes the ping even worse, like 40+. The Xbox is the only thing on the network. I know there's no correlation between ping and internet speed, but I don't know how I've got worse ping when nothing has changed other than service provider
Devastate
Unfortunately, it might just be Virgin Media. If you search the r/VirginMedia subreddit, you'll find multiple posts relating to increased ping compared to other providers.

talbyfish
Av just got rid of virgin for plusnet fibre to the premises, the ping is better but fifa plays terrible now, ping spikes every 20 secs or so. Wish I never changed but it’s half the price. hoping it’s the hub2 becouse I have an r3 coming this week.

Nightmare, I'm still in my 14 day cooking off period with virgin but can't get connected with anyone else in the mean time, can't be being without internet this day in ages haha

talbyfish
I think virgin has a minimum ping becouse I would ping loads of servers round the UK and and the lowest was I could get was 23 on the server 5 miles away in Newcastle upon Tyne. London was 40ish

This. I scanned through Reddit last night after you mentioned it, there's a fair few VM engineers / technicians that weighed in on the discussion and it seems to be an issue with their older wiring and systems apparently. Weather I use the VM router or the Netdumer, the ping is the same 26+, probably doesn't sound much, but it's quite high compared to the 16 I was getting Devastate

So no other devices are connected to the internet at all currently? Have you entered your new speeds into the router? How have you setup Congestion Control? Is the Xbox connected via ethernet or WiFi? How have you setup the Geo-Filter? Are you testing the ping in game?

Id assume property if it's new It’s was fibre to the wall of the house but same cable as sky tv Ariel the screw in type from the inside wall to the router. (So basically 1metre of copper on the end of the fibre).Plusnet is fibre to the router. Both gave the full 1000 down 110 up speeds but Plusnet about 10 ms faster ping

Yeah I've got the Xbox added in smartboost, I'm connected via ethernet, geofilter on, I can't find congestion control? But the only thing connected to the internet is the Xbox via ethernet cable. Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted May 22 Administrators Share Posted May 22 No worries! As in you've just added it as a device rather than added Gaming for example? Are you forcing the very closest server to you on the Geo-Filter? Congestion Control can be found in Ping Optimizer > Advanced. I would say though if you're getting that same ping direct to the modem consistently then it will be VM. However, when switching to a new connection it can take a few weeks for it to settle, during this time the ping may be higher, it may be more unstable overall, slower than paid for speeds etc.

Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted May 23 Administrators Share Posted May 23 What about the Geo-Filter, are you setup to force only the closest servers? What percentages though specifically on Congestion Control?
