I know there was an issue getting it on originally, I can't recall if it was then ultimately not compatible with the architecture or not

That sucks  I upgraded from an Asus rt ac86u that I was using nordvpn with for the last 5 years might have to use the Asus Still just for Ethernet Backhaul mode and set the VPN up on that and turn off wireless

so I can't use a the VPN service then?

The VPN service is for connecting to your home network when you're away from home, if that's what you want it for then yes.

If you want a VPN to get 'easier' games or to bypass region restrictions then no that would fall under HybridVPN which isn't available
