Poor Wifi Range And Speed

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else's R3 just have extremely poor range and speed? With my laptop nearly touching the router and after messing with the settings for hours the max speed I've been able to achieve on a 1GB up down fiber connection is 300mbs. This is after messing with every channel, 5ghz, 2.5ghz, splitting the bands, disabling ipv6, smart boost fully disabled, etc. I've kind of been holding off on posting this since I figured an update might fix it but man..... it's getting old.... I'm to the point of just using my old XR500 because the wifi range is at least 3X and actually can hit nearly full gig speed.

What is the model of the modem/router the R3 is connected to and how have you set that to ensure all traffic flows to the R3? E.g. R3 in its DMZ, modem/bridge mode. Presumably you've also experimented with the channels? If so have you specifically used a WiFi analyzer to find the least congested ones? One thing that would make a big difference is adjusting the widths, have you tried that? Also ensure, it's in an elevated position as much as possible, ideally not on a metal surface and that there are no electrical / wireless devices e.g headphones etc within close proximity ~3 feet if possible.

Yeah I've done all that. I've read through these forums trying every fix I could find basically. Speed is best on 160 width of course (But its still less than 400mbs) but range becomes just the room the router is in. I have it on a shelf high up with nothing that could block the signals. Antennas are in the right position etc. I'm also out in the middle of nowhere on a big property so there's 0 wifi besides mine. Wifi analyzer is empty besides my signal. Swapping back to the XR500 and problem is instantly fixed. It only gets like 900mbs but its a lot better than 300.

Are you having this specifically with the latest firmware or did you have it with the previous one too?

Since I got it. Its on the latest firmware now though.

I have an ONT (Nokia ONT XS-010X-Q) with fiber that's in bridge mode so the router is handling everything. Ethernet I get extremely close to the full gig on DSLreports, google speed test, and on the router test itself, etc.

What kind of devices are you using to test the WiFi? Are they newer devices or older? Could you disable the protection options in troubleshooting as well as BI and DPI then try again please?

Extremely poor timing..... but I cant get into the interface anymore. I just keep getting critical error. Updated to the latest firmware a few days ago. Ctrl-f5 doesn't work and I just get a critical error if I try to continue.

If you click go to recovery options there and choose one of the options are you able to access after? If you could also grab the logs from there as well please as this shouldn't be happening much on the latest firmware

It just gets stuck at "Generating Report..." I've waited about 30 minutes and it's still doing that. Is a factory reset my only option...?

Okay no worries. If you haven't done a factory reset on this latest firmware then I would highly recommend it, it's a big jump from the previous version, that then may help with the WiFi. If you have already then a reboot, close the interface, wait 4 minutes then access should get you in

Okay I'm in after the factory reset. Got my channels setup the same way they were before. Turned off all of the protections in trouble shooting. Testing with a laptop nearly touching the router still and 270mbs down / up on the speed test with 5ghz wifi 80 channel width on a channel with 0 competition in the area.

How do you have Congestion Control set? If it's 100% then disable SmartBOOST fully from the menu so it shows on the page that it is disabled, what do you get then?

I'm not sure where congestion control is at. Smart boost has been fully disabled since it gave me issues some patches ago. One of the first things I did was disable smartboost after the factory reset.

You can find it in Ping Optimizer > Advanced but if you have fully disabled SmartBOOST you wouldn't be able to change it anyway. As fully disabled so the page looks like this?

Yep just like that. From the three dots on the top right I disabled it.

The devices you're testing on specifically are they all WiFi 5? Do you have any WiFi 6 devices you can use so you can compare the results?

All 3 devices, laptop, pc tower, and a phone are wifi 6 or 6e.

FingerTester, I know how frustrating it can be as I had the same issue.  A hard factory reset did the trick as recommended by Netduma Fraser. Just to verify, did you you follow the steps below:

To hard reset your router, you’ll need a paper clip like object.

Use the paper-clip to hold the reset pin on the back of the router for at least 30 seconds.  After 30 seconds release the paper-clip.  Leave the router alone for 5 minutes.  Access the interface once again and complete the initial setup process.

Good luck on getting up and running…Dave

Could you try downgrading the firmware version and try again please

It's done this on every firmware version since I got it and I bought it nearly when it released. I'm in the early access forum too so I get nearly every upgrade for the firmware. Is there a big difference with going backwards when I was just one update behind before I got the newest version?

EDIT: Okay back on .290 firmware with the laptop next to the router and 280mbs this morning......

I just wanted to see whether it improved or got worse prior to the latest update that did make specific changes to WiFi. For whatever reason it seems to be the max you can achieve with your setup/environment. Are you able to take the router somewhere else that has high speeds to see if you can get better speeds in a different environment?
