XR1000v2 Sort of Random Dropouts, Possibly Router CPU Related Please Help?

Recommended Posts

Set up..

BT Fibre 1G
XR1000 Main Router
XR500 AP
BT Hub AP (Sort of)

Issue..

Past couple of days my internet has been dropping out only when browsing the web, its seems random but I seem to be able to force a drop out by running speedtest.net. (it isn't exclusive to this, but definitely repeatable when running test)

The connection isn't completely disconnecting, speedtest reports it may be blocked by a firewall and if i try to access any other website for a minute or 2 they will not connect, however i can continue to stream music and tv on the same and separate devices.

I tried disconnecting the BT hub just in case it was interfering in some way, made no difference, and the problem occurs if i use a device through the BT hub, which seems to rule out the XR500 as the BT hub connects direct to the XR1000.

I've done the whole reboot process and reset through the software to no avail, going to try factory reset in about 20 mins once partner is finished working.

Anyone had any experience of this, I can't see anything in the logs other than the usual DoS and they don't really correlate with the dropouts, I've tried disabling the firewall on PC/Laptop but no difference.

Edit - Seems to coincide with high router CPU usage

Further update, DumaOS offered me an 'update' to 1.1.0.16_2.1.25 (even though I was on 1.1.0.22) I let it update and now says 1.1.0.16_2.1.25 on the top, but is still offering an update and when I click the update button it says my current version is 1.1.0.16 and the new version is 1.1.0.16_2.1.25 (the version the top bar say's I'm already on!?)

I've disabled auto updates and left as is, as CPU usage seems a lot lower and CPU2 appears to kick in a lot more than before, I can force it to drop out if I spam webpages and try to run speedtest at the same time, but under normal usage it doesn't seem to drop out as easily now. I've re-enables DoS protection too.

My gut says its tied to the CPU usage but I'm at a loss otherwise!

Yeah if it's cloud related you'll need to wait for us to sort it. Good to know the firmware doesn't make a difference

Thanks Fraser, appreciate your assistance on here I've only been using the forum since this issue arose but I see you responding to everyone constantly!

Is there definitely (or likely at least) a problem at your end (cloud related)? I've been trying to rule out the issue being BT's supply, they have tested the line and say nothing is wrong with it and the lights on the ONT are all solid, my last step is to set up the BT hub as the main router but I really want to avoid that if I can.. I just know I'll screw the whole network once I start messing with it!

Sorry to tag along but I've been having the same issue too with Virgin Media in the UK, didn't happen until the last firmware update to 1.1.0.22_2.1.34. Everything works as normal but then I get a DNS error when I open a new webpage and the CPU usage spikes to 100%, this happens on all devices for around 30 seconds to a minute, when the CPU lowers the pages load normally.

After looking into it personally a bit more I would say it's highly likely to be a cloud update. As far as I can tell NG have auto updated people to the mentioned firmware version there (we originally completed the DumaOS changes for that a very long time ago) but didn't mention they were doing it and so I think it's trying to use a cloud update it can't use or isn't using the one it should now be using. I've given my findings to the team so it should hopefully be a quick update once they identify the specific cause.

Seems to have resolved itself for me, Netgear support suggested I set my DNS to static but didn't get round to it either way!

Great to hear that, thanks for the update, we did put out a cloud update on Friday with a fix so looks like it worked!
