AT&T Fiber BGW320 in Passthrough mode

I currently have an XR500, and i have tried putting my BGW320 in bridged mode, and while it works, it drops internet at least one time a day (when renewing the external IP), and i have to reboot the router.  This current router is about 4-5 years old, but with the newest release of firmware, it has been really amazing when working.

i am going to call AT&T today to see if i can get a static IP address to address the DHCP renewal issue with the XR500.

My question is, is the R3 a more stable platform to be able to do this with?  Are you anticipating any other router platforms to come with DUMAos, with a multi-Gig interface?  We have 9 people living here plus my wife and i both work from home, so we have AT&T 2.5gb internet, and would hate to loose that feature also.

since i have a TP-Link Omada access points in the house, WiFi is not a concern, as i will turn the radio's off.

Thank you for your consideration on this question!

Dave

Are you absolutely certain it is the external IP renewing causing the issue? Could you provide the XR log when it happens (prior to a reboot if you do one) please? Then I can double check - no point you paying out for a static IP that may not resolve it. The R3 does and will receive more updates, the XR500 won't receive any more feature updates and any bug fix updates will be slower. It really depends what you're wanting out of the router, it seems as though with your speeds you are less likely to need QoS - unless downloads happen frequently but then again neither router would be able to prevent that effectively given the speed is more than they can handle and they'd be the secondary router presumably so if it's just the Geo-Filter you're after then it's hard to provide a compelling reason for you to upgrade just for that sole purpose unless the extra Geo-Filter features on the R3 compared to the XR500 are worth that extra price to you.

@Netduma Fraser, i have not gotten any logs as of yet, but when i go back to the config again, when it happens i will get the logs.  The DHCP time on the BGW320 was set to 10 minutes and that's about when stuff disconnected, so that is why i thought it may have been DHCP, and going static would solve that.  It's only like $5 a month for a static address, so that's why i was like easy enough to do and try.

Once i get it back up this weekend, if it happens again, i will reply to this thread with the logs

Thanks,

Dave

Just in case you have not tried this (I assume you know what youre doing)...set IP passthrough on DEFAULT SERVER in the ATT gateway and passthrough mode as DHCPS-fixed. make sure you assign the XR500 an IP address on the gateway's subnet so you can choose the default server internal address to be the IP address assigned to the XR500. I have had both an R2 and R3 and both have worked completely fine with this setup on the BGW-320 ATT gateway. Infact the last time I had to reboot the R3 was 3 weeks ago and that was only because i was moving the wires around.

good luck
