White_Mamba
Why can't I edit a reserved IP's MAC address? Also, why can't I rearrange my reserved IPs list? These seem like they should have been available from day one and yet here we are and still nothing. I like my reserved IPs in order to make it easy to find and especially without being able to edit the MAC address, like you could on the XR-500, it is a mess and is really frustrating. Is there anything in the works for either or both of these?
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 26, 2024 Administrators Share Posted October 26, 2024 A MAC address is a unique identifier of the device, it's not set by the router but by the device itself. If you edited the MAC address it would no longer match the device and the reserved IP would then not match the device rendering it useless. If you've named your devices then it should be easy to find the device you want to edit on the reserved IP list?
White_Mamba
My devices are numbered and I have them in numerical order to match their name on the devices list so I just have to find the number. I have devices that I no longer use. I would really like it if I could just change the MAC address to match the new device I want to add instead of having to delete it, adding the new device which puts it at the end, and then going through and having to adjust all of the DHCP numbers. It would be amazing if they could add the option to just rearrange the list order. Some people live in chaos and others, like myself, live in order and control, which is why I bought this. It's just a suggestion brought up out of frustration.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 27, 2024 Administrators Share Posted October 27, 2024 You add numbers to their existing name e.g. 1 - PlayStation? Doesn't make sense to me personally but fair enough! You can't change the MAC on the router, it's a device specific identifier set by your device manufacturer. I can pass on the re-order request but I don't think it's likely to be added as it's not really needed in most cases.
White_Mamba
I'm not talking about changing a device specific MAC address. I'm talking about changing the MAC address of one device to the MAC address of another device. I number them so I can keep track of them. Everytime I have to do a system reset, I have to put everything in from scratch because for some reason it's not possible for the router to remember any settings, it always has to be a complete system wipe. They router also sometimes adds names to devices by default so by numbering them, I can keep better track of what devices are on when or if I was the one who added it. It becomes really handy if you have kids and they have devices they use.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted October 27, 2024 Administrators Share Posted October 27, 2024 That's something you'd have to do on the device itself - the router is just reading the MAC address from the device. What would be the usecase for this? Perhaps I can suggest an alternative. How are you doing a reset exactly? It should add the default names of the devices, does it not do that? White_Mamba
I don't think you are getting what I am saying. I just like how the XR-500 handles it.
