XR500 drops out and re-connects to PC

Recommended Posts

Hello

I have a strange issue which I'll try to explain my best. Occasionally, for whatever reason my internet might drop out and then instead of reconnecting back to my ISP via the router it will try to connect through the PC ethernet port/motherboard. To fix the issue, I need to call my ISP, who ask me to remove the LAN cable from the WAN port, they kick my connection on their end, I plug the ethernet cable back in and that forces it to reconnect to my modem. Hopefully this makes sense but its starting to happen more often now and becoming very frustrating. Anything I can do to fix this issue? Is it a router setting or a setting? I just recently purchased a new PC and its happening on this one too so I'm leaning towards this being a router issue.

Thanks

Hello, welcome to the forum!

Could you clarify/explain what you mean by this?

As that doesn't really make any sense, how are you determining this is happening?

Hey,  thanks for getting back to me!

Yeah its a really hard one to explain to be honest. Basically I know when it happens because my internet drops out and I get the error that it cannot resolve/find the DNS. I have no idea what causes it or why it happens but essentially it will drop out, attempt to reconnect to the router but instead connect to my PC motherboard which is ASUS and when I call my ISP they tell me that its saying I have an asus motherboard trying to connect to the internet and not the router which is why they have to kick the connection and force it to connect back to the router. Maybe the best thing to do is keep an eye on it and if it happens again I can try grab a log or something which might help identify the issue.

Right okay, the PC is bypassing the router to connect to the internet instead. A log would be helpful but in the meantime on the router set a static/reserved IP for the PC that it's happening with and see if it continues please.

Ok thank you, I'll give it a try and see how it goes when it happens again. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to networking, how do I set the static IP and what should it be? =/

Check the IP of your device in the Device Manager, then go to LAN Setup on the router, add a reservation for that device and use the same IP, I believe it fills this in for you, then save.
