Simon Thomas
Is the short black thin ethernet cable that comes in the box good enough quality to connect from the modem to the Netduma router? In other words is it at least a Cat5e? Its the one with two yellow ends. I came across the below on How to test your Internet Ping : NETDUMA One reason for asking is that i am trying to get to the bottom of why I can't stabilise my ping whilst using congestion control settings etc.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted June 21 Administrators Share Posted June 21 It is yes. Under what circumstances was the test done? What website did you use? Have you tried without the R3 to see if you get similar results?
Simon Thomas
Ok good to know thanks! The test above was done using www.google.com (top left of the graph) and during a period where my wife was watching youtube and scrolling through instagram and whatsapp. Below (first graph) is a test I ran this morning (without my wife using the internet and no downloads being undertaken). About halfway through the timeline in the graph is when I connected my R3, and as you can see there is a noticeable drop off in the number of ping spikes and the spikes themselves are reduced in size, so overall using my R3 likely produced a more stable connection. I ran the test at 0.5ms. However, something that I noticed at the time is that Hop 1 is showing an average packet loss percentage (PL%) of approx 62% when set to Focus being on "Auto". Also, below is another graph showing that the ping spikes are back again while my R3 is connected (again no one in my family downloading any content), and I am averaging about 71% on Hop 1. Just trying to work out if my connection is good or bad as my in-game experiences in MW3 still put me about a second behind (or so it feels), getting me killed constantly with ease by others, especially in Resurgence maps? All my connections ie. cables are fine, bufferbloat A+, download 550mbps / upload 40mbps, pc optimized well too. From what I can see above my ping averages about 10-15ms somewhere in that range, but goes higher on many occasions (0.5ms intervals). I dont have Pingplotter pro and so cant see what my MOS is unfortunately. Not sure if i am at a point where I should be contacting my service provider? if anyone has any advice that would be appreciated.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted June 22 Administrators Share Posted June 22 Ah, don't do 0.5ms that's why it looks so spiky, can you do another one with the default 2.5ms please
Simon Thomas
Hi Fraser, I rebooted the R3 as well. Below is a snippet of the default 2.5ms while playing MW3 multiplayer. Also, following the reboot i am not getting the packet loss from the R3 that I was. What are your thoughts?
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted June 22 Administrators Share Posted June 22 It's a lot better definitely, you'll still need to do one direct from the modem with no traffic so you can have your baseline to compare it to, then you know how much play you have in being able to increase stability
Simon Thomas
First graph with the R3 Second graph without (from 5:54 onwards) Thoughts?
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted June 22 Administrators Share Posted June 22 Okay that's great that they're very similar, it's not terrible, that's your base line now. So set off some downloads, streams etc then start with a high value for Congestion Control (set to Always), say 95% then check the graph, decrease by 10%, check, decrease by 10% etc, until you get to a value that is pretty good and then try 5% either side of that value to see if it can be improved. It's important to note that Download & Upload on Congestion Control don't have to be the same value and that you may have a better experience with differing values. So ideally you should see the above, then you'll start a download and the ping will get much higher and more spikey and you'll then be able to bring that down gradually until you find the right values that'll bring you as close to the graphs above as possible. You can but ideally you want it to be direct from the hub, as it would be a proper baseline and also throw up any potential issues with the hub itself or line, otherwise you may spend a long time trying to resolve issues with CC on the R3 that can't be solved as they're inherent to your line/hub.
