hendrix69
I have been getting massive ping spikes and packet loss when using the R3, coming from an R2 which was perfect. Virginmedia Superhub 3 (modem mode) to R3 controlling wireless network and PC hardwired and i get the following BQM graph. https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality/share/0d85e19a4faf39849d486e383b3780273afaf1ac-26-12-2023 Getting Ping Spikes at over 8000ms . I then put the Superhub 3 back into Router mode controlling the Wifi and only the R3 connected, the PC was the only thing connected to the R3 (wired) and the Wifi turned off on the R3. So the only thing connected to the Internet was the PC, hardwired to the R3 with no other devices connected to the Superhub or the R3. I set up another BQM. https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality/share/9bb10fc1c84e71c73274365b91ea136a1819d886 So from 12pm until just before 1pm the Superhub was managing the Wifi and only thing connected to the R3 was the PC. Just before 2pm i turned off the Wifi on the Superhub and set the R3 to manage the Wifi the Ping increased quite a bit, at this time the only thing on the Wifi was my iPhone. At 5pm I switched the Wifi back to the Superhub and everything was back to normal again. I was not gaming at these times. When the R3 is connected to the Superhub in Router Mode, the R3 is in the DMZ and has a Static IP Address. Firmware for the R3 is v4.0.20. At the minute i cant use the R3 and the Router in Modem mode as the lag spikes are ridiculous and if i use the Superhub in Router mode ping increases quite a bit. when using the R2 with the Superhub in Modem mode everything worked ok and did not have any of these issues, am i missing something
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted December 27, 2023 Administrators Share Posted December 27, 2023 I was with Virgin Media and I always found the modem mode unstable at times, I would suggest using it in router mode with the R3 in its DMZ. Then have ALL devices connected to the R3, make sure you setup Congestion Control in Ping Optimizer > Advanced to use Always and then maybe 70%/70% for example, do you see the same thing then? hendrix69
.Thanks for the quick reply Fraser. That is the way it is setup now as it was totally unusable in Modem mode, i had it setup in Modem mode as i had the R2 setup like this for years without any problems. I started to reconnect everything back to the R3 last night one at a time. i had already setup Congestion Control and ping optimizer, but i will try 70% / 70% as you suggest and leave it for a while. What i dont understand is, R3 is in the DMZ of the Superhub and the only thing in the house connected to the internet is my PC, nothing else wired and nothing connected by Wifi, if the Superhub is controlling the Wifi i get a steady average Latency, as soon as i put the R3 in control of the Wifi ( again nothing connected ) the average Latency doubles. Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted December 29, 2023 Administrators Share Posted December 29, 2023 For those with the seemingly higher pings when using the R3 please do the following, ideally testing with PingPlotter and offering a plot from your ISP modem as a comparison: Ensure the upstream/ISP modem/router the R3 is connected to is setup with the R3 in its DMZ or in modem/bridge mode. Ensure ALL devices are connected to the R3 or at the very least that there are no devices connected/using internet on the upstream router when testing If you have multiple ethernet cables test using different cables connecting the R3 to the modem/the R3 to your device Disable IPv6 in LAN/WAN Please state if you are using PPPoE, VLAN or DHCP identifiers Use a different DNS such as 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1 As a test make an Internet rule to the device and allow ALL traffic then test, is there a difference? (Settings > Internet Rules) As a test put the PC in the DMZ (briefly for the test then remove), then do a test, is there a difference? Remove all prioritizations from SmartBOOST including activities/devices If the above doesn't help disable SmartBOOST entirely from the 3 dots menu top right of the page > Settings then test Disable Steady Ping on the Geo-Filter page in case it is affecting traffic outside the Geo-Filter - also ensure no devices are added there Disable Adblocker Ensure you have your correct speeds entered in Speed Test > Advanced With SmartBOOST enabled, adjust Congestion Control in Ping Optimizer > Advanced and have it set to Always On and ensure speed test bypass is disabled Ensure you're doing this test over a wired connection - NOT WiFi Ensure in WAN/LAN Settings that the speeds of the ports are at 1Gbps Remove any port forwarding/DMZ/static routes you may have set Test at different times of the day i.e. during peak time (results may be worse) and during non peak times (should be better) Once you've covered everything on this list please let us know the results. This should give us a good indicator of what the problem may be if it's covered in the list or whether it's something more on the backend. The team can then have a look.
