XR500 performance issues

Recommended Posts

I have an XR500, recently upgraded to the V2.3.2.134 firmware.

I have tested all hosts, cables, and network devices in my network, the source is 100% the XR500.
It is in AP mode. Connections for large file transfers are always dropped, and there is a significant throughput loss both ways but primarily with upload.

Without the XR500, I can achieve speeds of ~850mbps up/down across hosts in my network.
With it, upload seems to be capped at ~350mbps and download gets knocked down anywhere from 50-200+ mbps.

The most annoying part is doing any kind of file transfer across hosts in my network through the XR500.
For example, using scp from one host to another. It will always fail unless the file transfer can finish within a few seconds. Other types of file transfer tools experience similar failures.
If I throttle the bandwidth used for the file transfer, it usually lets the transfer go a little longer but ultimately still fails.
This will happen in both wired and wireless file transfers.
There isn't any good indication on why the connection drops. It basically presents itself like if it were a faulty cable or something.
Drops only happen for internal file transfers. For example, downloading a large file from a remote fileserver at 50MB/s does not cause any issue.

The latest firmware upgrade did actually help my download speed take less of a hit. But either way, this is totally unacceptable performance. This issue has pretty much persisted across several firmware versions since I've had this router for about 3 years now.

The closest thing I've seen to a similar issue is this one from 2019, along with some tips suggesting to put an additional switch between the router and affected host.
Am I facing a known issue of some kind? Is there anything I can try to resolve this?

Hey, welcome to the forum!

As it is in AP mode, DumaOS is essentially disabled so none of our settings would affect it, therefore I would recommend making a ticket direct with Netgear for this as they would be better suited to helping you with this: https://www.netgear.com/support/

Thanks! I have made a post over there as well.
Someone suggested that I do a factory reset on the router just in case.

This led me to trying the same tests in both router and AP mode. It runs slightly better on router mode, but still a significant performance drop.
Just thought I'd leave the update.
