XR300 slow dowload speed

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I just bought a Netgear XR300 to replace the router that was provided by my ISP (a TP-Link Archer VR1600v) and I’m having trouble with the download speed.

My connection type is cable (in Australia it’s called NBN HFC) 100Mbps down / 40Mbps up. The setup is like that: Cable -> Arris modem -> cat 5e -> XR300 -> cat 5e -> PC

When I had the Archer VR1600v I had solid 95Mbps down / 35Mbps up. I essentially swapped the routers, keeping the rest as is. But I always get slower download speeds with the XR300.

I tried this guide below with no luck http://support.netduma.com/support/solutions/articles/16000076586-dumaos-optimal-settings-guide-maxmimum-bandwidth-speeds. I swapped the cable between the model and the router with the 5e from the router’s box to be sure. Still the same.

With the default settings I only get 60Mbps down. If I tweak QoS related settings it is a bit variable. If I allocate more bandwidth to my device in the QoS settings or completely disable altogether QoS interestingly it does the opposite and speed goes down to 50Mbps. Even if the PC is the only device connected, “share excess” is ticked and there is no other traffic than speedtest.

The highest I could get is 80Mbps down on the wired connection turning off the default “DumaOS Classified Games” Traffic Prioritization, setting “Anti-Bufferbloat” to never, leaving QoS and “Share excess” on. Doing the same tests with the same settings over Wireless I can occasionally better get results but still not full speed.

The only “odd” parameter is that my ISP requires VLAN tagging set to 2 for all port to get the internet. Apart from that nothing weird, CPU is not spiking.

Would a kind soul have an advice to get to full download speed?

Welcome to the forum!

As you mention VLAN tagging, let's eliminate that as a potential problem first.

Could you please replace the XR300 with the old Archer and configure VLAN tagging on that router. Verify it's getting full speeds, then connect the XR300 to the Archer by connecting an ethernet cable from the WAN port on the XR300 to a LAN port on the Archer.

After this, your network should look as follows:

Cable -> Arris modem -> Archer -> XR300 -> PC

With this setup, the XR300 is no longer handling any VLAN responsibility. Re-test your speeds and check if the problem remains, if so, VLAN tagging is not the issue.

@Netduma Liam, thanks for answering.

So I did what you proposed,

Cable -> Arris modem -> Archer -> XR300 -> PC

In addition to removing the VLAN tagging, I had to disable PPPoE on the XR300 to let the Archer do it. And yes I had my download back to an average of 95Mbps. I imagine it is a problem with VLAN tagging in the XR300. Obviously the idea was to replace the Archer with the XR300 rather than chain them. Do you think there is a way to get the XR300 working at full speed and with VLAN tagging?

OK, thanks for confirming.

Is the Arris a pure modem or is it a router/modem combo? If so, is there any way you can enter the PPPoE and VLAN credentials on the modem?

It's an Arris CM8200B, provided by the ISP (they provide the Arris modem and the TPLink router as a part of their standard NBN HFC setup). I checked the documentation and the Arris modem does not do PPPoE and VLAN tagging.

OK thanks for trying this anyway.

I'm afraid as this is an issue with NETGEAR's network settings, there's a limited amount I can do to assist on this one. I'd suggest heading to support.netgear.com and raised a ticket with them, they can assist you further.

Apologies I couldn't find the solution for you!
