XR500 - Lag playing PS4 while streaming video on a PS3

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I just purchased the XR500 in hopes that it would decrease my game lag when people were streaming Netflix/Hulu.  Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to be the case. I play on my PS4 and have followed all of the optimal setting guides located here http://support.netduma.com/support/solutions/folders/16000090646 to the best of my abilities. My ps4 is wired to my router which is connected to a netgear modem. Our streaming device is a PS3 which is wireless. Our cable connection is in the living room with the PS4 and the PS3 is in the bedroom, so I am unabe to run a wired connection to the PS3. I understand that streaming services like Netflix and Hulu are bandwidth hogs, and I've tried to allocate almost 100% of my download and upload bandwith to the PS4 via Duma OS, but its like the PS3 just ignores those rules. Can the XR500 differentiate between game traffic and stream traffic for the PS3, or does it just assume I'm playing games on both systems? I tried to play COD Modern Warefare last night and everything was just so bad, even my audio connection in party chat was bad due to the streaming.

I had an Asus router before I got the XR500 yesterday, and while it didn't completely stop the lag, it wasn't nearly as bad as its been with the XR500 and that I bought that router 8 years ago. I was looking around the forums last night to see if I could find similar issues but didn't have any luck. So if anyone can provide some assitance or a reference to thread where this has happened, I would be very grateful. Otherwise I may just have to return this router and go back to my old one because unfortunately any game is just unplayable while someone is streaming.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

Could you answer these questions please so I can get a better idea of your network:

  • What internet speeds do you pay for?
  • What is your physical setup? e.g. ISP hub with wifi devices connected > XR (wired and wireless devices)
  • Do you have Smart Connect enabled?
  • What ping are you getting on the game as shown by the Geo-Filter?

Hi,

Thank you for the welcome.

  • My speedtest current shows DL of 200-215 mbps and UPL of roughly 4-5 mbps
  • Physical setup is netgear modem I purchased on my own but have Comcast internet. So cable hook up to modem, and then thats connected to the XR. PS4 is the only device that I have wired to the router, all other devices are connected wiresless.
  • Smart connect is enabled.
  • I will have to get back to you regarding the ping. In the past, I have had my ping show relatively good 50-70) while streaming is occuring but the game is still super laggy despite the ping being decent. But as I said, I will get back to you on that

Just to double check, the modem doesn't provide any WiFi at all? Seems like the ping isn't showing for Auto Ping for some reason so disable it and then manually ping the host, what do you get? Disable IPv6 as well as Smart Connect and manually connect to 2.4 or 5GHz. What QoS Settings are you using?

Modem does not provide wifi. It is a Netgear CM500v. I have switched off IPV6 and smart connect. When you say manually connect to 2.4 or 5q I'm assuming you mean to uncheck both of the checked boxes in the pictures below for that given network? (sorry I'm relatively new at this). I have also attached my QOS settings to this post. I appreciate you taking the time to help me. I will try to do a  manual ping of the host and let you know what I get now that these other steps have been taken.

Smart Connect makes one WiFi network that you connect to so when you disable this it splits into two, one for 2.4GHz and one for 5GHz so it's probably Palmsprings for 2.4GHz and Palmsprings-5G for example for 5GHz so you'll have to make your devices manually connect to one of those. Remove the added PlayStation rule for Traffic Prioritization as it's covered by DumaOS Classified Games so no need to prioritize twice. Also I'd suggest switching Anti-Bufferbloat to Always and then download heavily while following this guide and use different Anti-Bufferbloat percentages to find what keeps the ping as low/stable as possible. http://support.netduma.com/en/support/solutions/articles/16000074717-how-to-test-your-internet-ping
