Stef Nighthawk
Hi, I've been seeing notifications on my PS4 about the ethernet cable getting disconnected every hour. At the same time time-critical connnections were dropped on other devices and an alert about internet being disconnected is being shown. I've been looking for the cause of these disruptions and may have found it. On the provider's side the DHCP lease time is set to 2 hours. Each hour the router needs to renew the IP address of it's WAN interface all the client connections to the router also drop. It's very noticeable on the interface statistics of the wired connections where the uptime correspond at the time the last lease was obtained. It is not possible to set the IP address fixed on the WAN interface. ISP doesn't provide that functionality for domestic users.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted April 9, 2020 Administrators Share Posted April 9, 2020 Hey, welcome to the forum! Go to Settings > Internet Setup and switch from Dynamic to Static. That should prevent the ISP hub from assigning new IPs and dropping you off the Internet. You may need to do a reboot after applying it if you don't have a connection. Stef Nighthawk
Static WAN address is not allowed and breaches contract with the ISP.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted April 9, 2020 Administrators Share Posted April 9, 2020 It just ensures that the ISP modem/router gives out the same address to the XR every time, it's nothing to do with the public IP address so I can't see that being a problem. Stef Nighthawk
Considering that the ISP charges 28€ without tax per month for fixed IP addresses I'm not taking the chance to get caught with an improper configuration at my end. I think that I've found a workaround. XR500 V2.3.2.56 can't handle IPv4 DHCP and IPv6 DHCP at the same time. I've deactivated the IPv6 stack on the router and now the router doesn't disconnect everything during the ISP's renewal. Running IPv4 only still works for everything on the internet so, I guess I can live with IPV4-only for now. Here's hoping the IPv6 stack can be re-activated without issues in a next DumaOS version. Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted April 9, 2020 Administrators Share Posted April 9, 2020 Yes that's for a fixed public IP address. Glad you've found the solution, let us know how you get on!
