fatalconcept
We just cut the cable and have moved to all streaming. We also unfortunately have a 1 TB data cap so being able to keep a close eye on my data usage is important and the xr500 and dumaos has been great for this so far. However, I did have a quick question. In network monitoring, it indicates that the consumption is measured in Mbps (megabits), but in the traffic meter it looks like it is in megabytes rather that megabits. However, when I look in the real time traffic meter the data consumption increases at 1:1 with the Mbps reading on the network monitoring. for example, if the network is showing a usage of 10 Mbps and I look in the traffic meter with a 5 second poll, it will increase the number of Mbytes by 50. My confusion is that since Mb and Mbyte are different units, why the traffic meter would show a 1:1 increase.
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted February 9, 2020 Administrators Share Posted February 9, 2020 Hey, welcome to the forum! I had to double check this myself, I imposed a 1TB cap and got it to warn me once I'd used "100 megabytes" a typical speedtest.net test will only consume 10MB of data. As soon as I'd done one test it informed meI was at my warning level. So it looks like it is reporting Mbps instead of MBps. Essentially you it doesn't look like you'll be able to rely upon this to track your data usage. I'll bring this up immediately with the team. We will be doing data usage ourselves in our next update but I apologise that it doesn't help you with the issue now.
fatalconcept
Wow, thanks for the quick response and testing it yourself! You guys really are as awesome as everyone has said. Makes me even happier I went with this device. Just to double check, what you're saying is that the traffic meter is reporting in Mbps? If that's the case it is fine, I can just do a conversion to get a rough idea of what my consumption is. Good to know it may be coming in the future update, I'm really looking forward to 3.0! Thanks again!
Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted February 9, 2020 Administrators Share Posted February 9, 2020 I'm not quite sure because it's reporting different values to me for everything as far as I can tell. What I would do is probably give yourself a big margin for error and say cap it at 900GB for example then check with your ISP and see how much you've used if it reports that you've hit it. 3.0 is going to be great, glad you're excited!
