I noticed this morning that HybridVPN was reporting status failed. I tried several .ovpn files, all the same error:

  • 11 months later...

Following up on MBRGuru's post, I have a relatively new XR500 that consistently experiences HybridVPN failures using the built-in HideMyAss configuration and account settings. This issue goes back to just after purchase and initial setup and has continued after the most recent firmware update.  This failure occurs whether I'm using the built-in Basic setup or Advanced option using config files from another VPN provider (IPVanish), which I was using before buying the XR500. I'm attaching two associated log files from recent failures, both using the built-in HMA VPN config, in the hope that you could provide some insights. Thank you.

Hey, welcome to the forum!

Sorry but 89 pages of log files isn't going to help much there. What happens exactly, it fails to connect or disconnects when it's being used? If the latter how often does that occur?

Oops; I'm very sorry - the version I pasted from the logs into my own issue tracking document was significantly smaller and targeted. My intent was to discreetly show the failure-related text lines from the log.

Background - I signed up for an HMA account to use the onboard HybridVPN capability in the XR500. There are never any issues starting the VPN using my account credentials, and the VPN runs fine for several days, at least, but invariably I'll discover later that the VPN has failed. So far the only workaround is to simply re-enter my credentials and restart the VPN by clicking on the Enable button in the DumaOS's HybridVPN GUI. The VPN will run fine for several days but invariably will fail again. Here are the common last three lines from each of these failure events. Pls let me know if you need to see more of the log:

Wed Dec  2 13:14:37 2020 /dumaos/apps/usr/com.netdumasoftware.hybridvpn/openvpn-event.lua openvpndown 16 tun0 1500 1553 100.120.86.23 255.255.248.0 init openvpnevent.lua: Exec 'iptables -t filter -D  forwarding_rule  -o tun0 -j ACCEPT' failed with 1

Not sure what you mean; I don't manually config anything for HMA other than entering my username/password since it's already built-in to the HybridVPN for the XR500. I simply add my credentials, select UDP vs TCP and enable. Are you asking me for the HMA manual config file?

Update on HybridVPN connection failure and keep alive fix - Tweaking the keep alive seemed to work at first, but I later noticed that while the VPN status showed 'Connected', all the other status fields were blank, including country, city, and protocol, etc., plus I'm again getting popup ads for things we searched for while shopping online Christmas since the keep alive tweak was made. I wouldn't think that this search data would could be gleaned by the internet provider if I was using a VPN connection. I'm attaching a screen shot of those blank settings, and any insights you could provide would be great. Thanks

When you're using an advanced/manual config file that information won't populate so that is normal. You will still get ads because the websites you visit will leave cookies and trackers, that is how Facebook tracks you across the internet for example and then knows what ads to show you so using a VPN wouldn't help in that sense. Glad to hear the keepalive command helped!

One last question and unrelated I meant to include - I've seen multiple references to doing a factory reset after a firmware upgrade. Under which scenario(s) for what purpose is a post f/w upgrade factory reset carried out? Perhaps my understanding of a factory reset is inadequate, but I thought that would reset the router back to its original factory installed f/w. My XR500 seemed to respond well to the latest f/w upgrade, but the many references to it have me wondering whether it's generally a recommended best practice for every f/w upgrade or or just for specific issues encountered on specific models. The manual does not mention doing a factory reset after f/w upgrades, so any clarification you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In terms of routers, or at least the ones with DumaOS on when you perform a factory reset it does not revert back to the original firmware version, for a PC for example they will do. It's best practice to factory reset after an upgrade on routers this clears out old level code from previous versions which could cause issues otherwise.
