jerseytiger
I'm not an expert at networking, but I've been able to get basic stuff to work in the past. I'm trying to keep things reasonably simple, but other than gaming (COD) I'm completely happy with my current setup. I got the R1 solely for the gaming aspect, and really for the geofilter and ping assist. I would prefer to just add this to my current network. I have an Xfinity (Comcast) cable modem and an Asus AC68u. I use the Cloud/NAS feature of the AC68u by having a 2TB HD attached that I can access internally and externally, but mostly externally. I also like the wifi range of the AC68u as the house is reasonably large at 3,600sf, and I don't feel like changing every wireless device to a new network. Currently only my PS4 and PS3 are wired connections and I would like to leave it that way if possible. I more or less want to create 2 networks, one for my gaming room and another for the rest of the house. Due to the room layout wiring the computer directly will be difficult so I would like both networks to have wifi. And just connect to the Netduma to change router settings or monitor performance, which I could also do from my ipad. My setup I want to be as follows: Modem > Asus AC68U > Netduma R1 > Consoles ...with a PC and Ipad having wifi access choice of either router. Everything else will remain on the Asus wifi with nothing wired to it except the Netduma R1. I know I won't get all the features that are built-in, but to be honest I'm not sure I need them. My connection speed is about 126 Mbps down and 12 Mbps down maxed out, but my PS4 maxes out at about 50 Mbps down and 8 Mbps up. The only connection that would put a strain on is the one that would be connected wirelessly to the Netduma and I can control that manually not to download when playing. I realize this post was long winded, but does this setup seem like it will work?
Netduma Staff Netduma Crossy Posted June 24, 2015 Netduma Staff Share Posted June 24, 2015 Yep, that definitely sounds like it would work! As you said, you won't get all the features of the Netduma but if you don't mind then this setup would work fine.
Administrators Netduma Iain Posted June 24, 2015 Administrators Share Posted June 24, 2015 Hi Jersey That setup will work but remember its not about speed its about other people making you lag thats why we recommend reversing the setup. You can still keep all the wifi devices connected without changing SSID/password and you are also able to get all the benefits of the R1. If I was you I'd do: Modem > R1 > Asus > Wifi Devices > Wired Devices Also doing it this way means you can access the R1 from any device on your network without any hassle Don't forget to go through this when you setup the R1: http://wiki.netduma.com/doku.php?id=fine_tune_netduma

I may give it a try if it's not going to upset anything. Will I still be able to access my storage device that is attached to my Asus router externally? Administrators Netduma Iain Posted June 24, 2015 Administrators Share Posted June 24, 2015 Oh I see good point, any devices that are connected to Asus that need to communicate should all be connected via the asus. So I'd put same setup with everything on Asus and game consoles direct into Netduma. Just clarify you're still doing: Modem > R1 > Asus

So if that's the case can I just have EVERYTHING (PS4 and PS3 wired included) attach to the Asus and then just have the Asus connect through the R1? Administrators Netduma Iain Posted June 24, 2015 Administrators Share Posted June 24, 2015 No I'd suggest you have Modem > Netduma > Asus > All devices Except playstations > Playstations In words connect the playstations via wire to the Netduma. Connect the asus WAN side via wire to the Netduma. Finally connect everything else to the Asus.

jerseytiger
If the R1 is first in line does the Asus have to be set up as an access point or media bridge, or can it just be a router like it is currently set up and have two distinct networks? I think most people who have an Asus connected to the Netduma set it up as an access point as then you can use all the featured of the Netduma as well as being able to use the Wifi of the Asus
Administrators Netduma Iain Posted June 24, 2015 Administrators Share Posted June 24, 2015 Crossy is correct if you have access point go for it. Then its literally behaves as a Netduma with the wifi of the Asus. I'd recommend disabling the Netduma wifi if so

I'd recommend disabling the Netduma wifi if so If I keep use the Asus as an AP and turn off the wifi of the Netduma will I still be able to: 1. Access the Netduma interface wirelessly through the Asus? It is too difficult to have a permanent wired connection from my PC to the Netduma if I can access it wirelessly that would be good. 2. Will I be able to connect to my AiCloud (the USB storage attached to the Asus) from an external location? 3. Will the network name and access remain unchanged so that I don't have to go to every device and give new access to every device?
Netduma Staff Netduma Crossy Posted June 24, 2015 Netduma Staff Share Posted June 24, 2015 I'll answer your questions in order: 1) Yes you can - you should be able to access it with whatever IP you would usually access it with 2) I'm not sure - when you put it in AP mode does it give you a warning telling you it won't work or anything like that? 3) As long as you give it the same network name and password there should be no issue with having to re-connect all the new devices. jerseytiger
OK so I got everything set up the way I originally planned. I may try to set it up with the R1 first this weekend when I have more time. The R1 seems to be working great. I had a few WTF moments but for the most part it was running great. I would like to monitor the ping, but I can't find the live ping stats. Can anyone point me to where it is?

Then scroll down and you will see the 'host descriptor' box with a button that says 'ping' on it. If you press this a graph will appear with the ping to the host on it There are some more instructions and screen shots here.
