omega4
Don't most security experts recommend that we should NOT use UPnP, citing security flaws that hackers can use to compromise networks and the PCs attached to them? If so, why are we recommending that UPnP be used for gaming purposes? I'm just curious. Thanks.
omega4
No one is recommendeding it. I would never. But old saying is if it ain't broke don't fix it applies to some old people here. I also don't understand why buy a high end device you can alter and mod jus to use auto settings? Kinda like average person buying iPhone over Android. People want simplicity. Which is why some people go upnp. Upnp is bad but we shouldn't put fear into consumers. I don't agree with some things on this forum as do u. I do what is best for me or works for me. Everyone has the right to do what they want. Port forwarding manually fixes many issues in this router. It's stickied now how to do it. But still many users want everything handed to them then complain because they sadly, too lazy to make it right first time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I am not currently using UPnP. I also did not forward any ports. Yet, the Netduma R1 seems to be doing its job in connecting me with COD IW hosts where my ping to the host is about 18 - 20 ms. My NAT is Open. I'm gaming on the PS4 here in the United States (Eastern coast). It sounds like port forwarding and UPnP are options for gamers to use if they find it necessary then. Fortunately in my case, it seems like it's not. CORRECTION: It turns out that my UPnP WAS turned on after all. That's why my NAT was open. As soon as I turned off UPnP, my NAT became Moderate. Administrators Netduma Fraser Posted December 19, 2016 Administrators Share Posted December 19, 2016 It's usually recommended because it will open any ports that are deemed necessary. Most people do not want to manually port forward as it can be confusing & time consuming in some cases and just want something that works.

Is UPnP safe to use though if I have other PCs on the same network as my PS4 console? While my console doesn't have anything of value on it if it's hacked, the same cannot be said for the other PCs on my network.

The R1 has a built in firewall as well so you should be fine. Never encountered anyone who's been hacked due to UPnP.

omega4
Just wanted to add that I decided that it's "better to be safe than sorry". I turned off (disabled) UPnP in my Netduma R1 router and forwarded the necessary ports for COD (PS4), since the Netduma R1 interface is so easy to use. Next task is to forward the ports for Rainbow 6 Siege (PS4). Thank you again for this great Netduma R1 router and the great community (moderators, members) here who are supporting it!
