DumaRocks
Still trying to get my head around this whole ping thing.Recently my provider accidentally cut the line just outside my house while hooking up a neighbors line. They came out, replaced the cable and buried it. When I did a ping test before without duma I was getting a 12ms pretty consistently using speedtest.net and ping test.net That didn't seem to change the ping in game though, it still bounced around 25ms up to 95ms but on average stayed around 35ms to 65ms. This seems to be the same with the duma as well so I don't think it improves my ping but just keeps it at those averages and helps avoid spikes. Not sure if that is everyone's experience in the US or not. After they buried the new line, my ping seems to consistently show 30ms with speedtest.net so it more than doubled. Not sure if that is because it is pinging a different server or if the quality of the line they buried is different. Not even sure if that kind of difference would matter much in game since I am new to all this stuff. This also doesn't seem to have affected my in game ping so again so this might be a pointless post outside of just educating myself more on this subject. My question is, when your do a speediest.net, it is testing it based on that server your pinging so does that reading really matter since your in game ping for XB1 / BO3 Servers are hitting other servers? Is it just a baseline for where to start to try to see what your settings are? Should I be concerned that it doubled after they changed the cables? Dillinger
You are well on your way to understanding this stuff. Ping and Speedtest test ONE SET of servers. Your ping to that server is the round trip from your house, to the box, and back. This is what we refer to as your BASE PING. In Game - Because you will be hitting ENTIRELY different servers for gaming, that base ping will probably be the lowest you ever get and you will usually find it slightly higher unless you are connecting a state/province/country away, in which case it will increase exponentially based on distance. The further the server is away from you, the higher the ping. As for your recent events with the cable company. I can quickly think of several instances that would increase line loss, but I don't know they would immediately add to your base ping as I have never specifically tested it. NOTE FOR OTHERS: Would adding additional electronic line loss, like a directional coupler or in-line splitter increase your base ping *IF* assembled correctly and was in good working order? Looks like we can both learn something in this thread.

They recently did some work on my lines and nodes outside my house as part of the TWC Maxx upgrade. I noticed that my base ping changed from about 15mS to about 30mS. I believe that they also upgraded some of the equipment within the node which is resulting in a higher ping. I can say that I also noticed that my connection is more stable even with the higher ping. Essentially, it is a RF equivalent of a small wire within transmission path.
