Guest Netduma_Iain
Sorry if this has been mentioned before but plesae make sure the ethernet cable between R1 and the modem is firmly connected. Also can you post the traceroute. Finally how often does it happen? Thanks

Guest Netduma_Iain
Are those dates? No the case is not closed it's my top priority at the moment. At the moment I believe there are 2 possible causes and maybe a 3rd1) I know it sounds silly but the wires not being firmly connected can cause this2) broadcast loop, the is a network loop at your homeCan you let me know exactly what equitment is connected to your R1 eg switch, other routers, wifi repeaters, wifi access points, hubs, power plugs, really any network equitment at all
W11cE
Yes, those are dates. The order is reversed here. Devices: R1: WAN: Thomson TCW770 cable modem. LAN: - TV - Chromebox - ZyXel GS-105S switch - Cable to other room where its connected to D-Link DGS-1008D switch ZyXel GS-105S: - EeePC laptop D-Link DGS-1008D: - 2x PC - Xbox One - PS4 What is this broadcast loop and what can cause it? Guest Netduma_Iain
It basically when you have a loop in your network. Its quite an easy mistake with lots of equipment. When something does a broadcast it just gets in a infinite loop and can take everything down. I'm looking into it now at the lab, trying to replicate it. Guest Netduma_Iain
W11cE, we are doing research into it can you let me know what modem you use please. I'm 99% sure its a bug with Motorola/Broadcom modems.
W11cE
Its Thomson TCW770.
Guest Netduma_Iain
Ok brilliant thanks, will be double checking the modem. Would it be possible to draw your network topology in paint and I'll see if its possible to have a broadcast storm with it. Thanks

Guest Netduma_Iain
Hi Sean, please start a new thread when you have an issue. Since I can help you quickly I'll let it fly. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do, the Internet diagnosis is a test of your pure connection with nothing using it. If you like post a new thread with a screenshot of the details page please. I may not respond till for a few hours as its nearly 1am here.
W11cE
This ok? This must have something to do with high bandwidth usage. Re-installed steam on my pc yesterday and this happened 2 times while downloading games. It downloaded at max 130Mbps the whole time (before high ping kicked in). Guest Netduma_Iain
W11ce that looks normal, bear in mind Wifi is also part of the network. So you can have a loop using wifi & wire. Basically the issue can either be the 1) modem 2) wire not fitted in properly 3) broadcast storm Lets assume you've done 2, so lets try rule out number 3. Next time it happens can you ping 192.168.88.1 and show me the result. Then do a traceroute to 8.8.8.8 and show me the result. Only do this when you have the high pings. If its the modem we are literally working with the manufacturer to try figure out what the bug is as we speak.

Guest Netduma_Iain
Ok that is not a broadcast storm it's a bug in your modem. You can see the high pings occur at the modem. We are working with the modem manufacturer to get to the bottom of this. This should only take a few days. Sorry for the inconvieance mate
W11cE
Np, Im happy I get support here. Im sure in most other places I would not get help from someone who understands whats going on. New thing I have noticed is that when I download something my ping rises. Only 10Mbps load gives jittering between 20 and 100ms. Full load through R1 causes that ~200ms ping before high ping state. Tried to stress my internet connection through modem directly without R1. It also gives higher ping, but not that agressively. So, is the simple answer that my modem is just bad one? And R1 just changes something enough that it turns modem into faulty condition?
Guest Netduma_Iain
Thanks W11CE. Well apparently we may have found the cause of the problem on the modems, I'll keep you updated on what the modem people say. In terms of ping's rising when you download that is what normally happens on the Internet. You should use our congestion control to stop that, so set it to 70% or so and you'll see the ping rise drop significantly when you are downloading.
