XR1000 | Open NAT Type on Multiple Consoles?
P4UL replied to P4UL's topic in NETGEAR Nighthawk Support (XR range)
Most of the issues start with the user interface - seems like at least half the things I click on result in an error message, and therefore a lot of the changes I try to make don't stick (eg I can't turn anything off in the traffic priority section, and once I've added something I can't delete it without a factory reset). Don't recall ever managing to load the ping heatmap either. As for what I noticed by way of functionality (assuming what I thought I had selected in the menus had actually changed the relevant setting), QoS seemed to limit every device to a permanently lower speed (even though share excess was enabled) and it didn't feel like the geo-filter worked like it had under 0.52 (ended up in much higher ping COD lobbies, and player accents suggested they probably weren't within the radius I had selected, with strict and no ping assist). Fraser had flagged the firmware was beta/buggy though, so I didn't come back at the time. As I noted above, it did allow me to get multiple consoles open for a period of time. After posting above about not having the features I bought the router for, I decided to wind back to 0.52. The issues in the preceding para don't seem to be a problem, though at times I do query whether QoS is limiting speeds on some devices. Haven't had the time to test it properly though. Looking forward to the new firmware whenever it's out. Thanks P4UL -

Sort of. The beta firmware Fraser shared (0.53) would allow me to get all consoles on open with 'NAT Filtering' set to open, but before long one or more of them would end up as strict / not connect to COD servers at all and the only fix I could find was to reboot the router and/or the consoles, which I got tired of - I reset this router more in the first month of owning it than I have every other router I've ever owned. I still run 0.53 because it seems to manage much better pings on Connection Benchmark (down from 20 something to <10), but now have Nat Filtering set to secured (which usually means at best 1 console might get open, but I never get strict), and I'm pretty sure things like QoS, traffic prioritisation and geo-filtering don't work properly in 0.53 (or at least not as well as they did with 0.52). As you've said, it's very frustrating an older router like the R7000 did it all right out of the box. I check back here every now and then to see if there's a proper firmware update that might fix it, but am also keeping an eye out for a WiFi 6 option with similar features as I'd pretty gladly dump the XR1000 if something else came along (by no means a reflection of the support you get from the Netduma guys on this forum, which I think is great). Would love to hear if anyone else has managed to fix it and had it stick for more than a day or so. P4UL -

Yes please - if too buggy, I'll roll back. Thanks -

Hi Fraser I just came back to the forums to check another issue (QoS slowing my connection, which I've only really noticed now I have a gigabit connection) and see in response to other NAT type issues that you're sharing a new XR1000 firmware? Can you please shoot me a copy - hopefully it fixes the old issue, and possibly the new one before I need to bother digging too deep. Thanks P4UL -

Thanks, Fraser. That's good to know, and I won't miss spending hours trying to troubleshoot it anymore. Do they have any idea whether it's the sort of issue that can be fixed in a firmware update, or is it a hardware issue? By all means drop me a line if there's ever any testing you or the NG team would like me run at my end. Thanks again to you and the team for your timely and helpful replies. It's much appreciated. Thanks. It has always been easy enough to get Type 2 on all PS5s. I'm just struggling get Open on more than one of them in-game (BOCW & MW) at the same time - the COD servers always peg at least 2 as Moderate, sometimes all 3. P4UL -

Thanks. It wouldn't let me try the same external port for more than one internal - get the following error message when I try to enter the 2nd one: Also tried putting one console in DMZ with no luck (still Moderate, and just Type 2 in PS test - thought proper DMZ should give Type 1). Is there anything I need to do other than tick the box, add the IP address for the console, turn UPnP off, no port forwards and apply/reboot as needed? I've had NAT set to Open (rather than Secured) since flagged in the above post. Thanks again P4UL -

Thanks. Gave it a go (as below) but resulted in 3 consoles on Moderate (none of them Open). I tried a few iterations of that approach at the beginning, but from memory couldn't get one to show as Open. Happy to try other combos that might have worked for others. Thanks P4UL -

Before I re-did the port forwards to show you how I set them earlier, I thought it would be helpful to see what UPnP was doing and the following is the screen shot. Interestingly, it wasn't the 3074/3074 console (0.24) that was getting an Open NAT in BOCW (it was .22 instead, which had 3074 internal to 3172, 3175 and 3088 external). For background, the router hadn't been reset since my earlier post and different consoles and games had been played at different times since (I normally only play BOCW and MW but the kids play Fortnite, Apex and other games as well). I then re-did the port forwards as follows. Didn't feel like it was something I could get wrong, but by all means let me know if there is anything I need to tweak to give it a better shot. Outcome was the 3074 went Open and the other two went Moderate. I had turned UPnP off and rebooted the router and all consoles. Hope these numbers mean more to others and there's something I can do to get them all Open NAT at the same time (even just 2 would feel like a massive win at this point). Thanks P4UL -

I finally got a chance to factory reset and run some testing, unfortunately with no luck. I left geo-filter, QOS, traffic priority, device names/types, etc all unchanged from factory and it unfolded as follows (I kept restarting the router and PS5s with each iteration): 1. Without making any changes to the default settings, the starting position was all 3 PS5s came up as Moderate in BOCW. 2. I changed from 'Secured' (default setting) to 'Open' and tested again - 1 PS5 was Open, the other 2 Moderate. UPnP was showing the following for ports: - Console 1 (LAN) 3074/3094 and 9308/9308 (Moderate) - Console 2 (WiFi) 3074/3149 (Moderate) - Console 3 (WiFi) 3074/3074 (Open) 3. I left it at 'Open' (did so for the balance) and tried the 3074, 3075 and 3076 port forwards mentioned above (with UPnP turned off). The 3074 PS5 got Open and the other 2 Moderate. 4. I tried a mix of the above with 3074 forwarded to 3075, 3075 to 3076 and 3076 to 3074 (read that suggestion elsewhere). All 3 PS5s were Moderate - 3074/3074 seems to be the magic formula. 5. I ran out of ideas and reverted to 2, with 'Open', UPnP enabled and no port-forwarding. 3 also achieves Open on 1 PS5, but I opted for UPnP over port forwarding for other functions it might serve and so it wasn't just the same PS5 that always scored the Open. Has anyone out there got multiple PS5s Open in BOCW with the XR1000, or perhaps some more suggestions I can try? Given I used to get Open on all my consoles with the earlier router, the above suggests to me (a non IT person) that the XR1000 is just not managing the connection between the COD servers and my consoles well enough. Moderate is still very playable, but it's not as good as Open and am keen to get back to that. Might need to pick up an XR500 or XR700 as 'Open' seems to sort multiple consoles for other users (I gave the R7000 away not expecting I'd need it). Is there perhaps another 'box' I can pick up and add to my setup that would let me put the XR1000 in DMZ so I still get Wifi 6? Thanks P4UL -

Thanks, Fraser. As a console player I don't usually have too much visibility on what geo-filter's doing while I play, but will try to see what's going on through the mobile app. Have now deleted each device from the geo-filter and am still getting moderate on 2 of them, so might try another factory reset and leave geo untouched for a while if there's a chance it's impacting how COD servers determine NAT type. Just need to find a window of time when no-one's online and I can play around a bit. Will let you know if I have any luck. Thanks again PAUL -

Thanks, Fraser - it's impressive to see how responsive you and the team are in these forums. Although I've read the Open option is buggy on the XR1000, I've always just left if it on anyway. As for my physical setup, I'm on HFC NBN in Australia, which means I have a locked box (Arris CM8200) connected directly to the XR1000, with one PS5 and a laptop connected over LAN and the rest of the house (including 2 more PS5s and 3 or so PS4s that don't get used anymore) over WIFI. Have just tried the 3074-3076 port forwarding with no luck. It just gives the Open NAT to the 3074 console, and moderate to the other two. Any other tips? I feel like I've done all the combos of geo on/off, etc and can't see a way I can use DMZ given my setup. Each PS5 shows up as Type 2 in the PS test, so I thought perhaps it was just a COD issue, but every now and then one of the Moderate PS5s will have NAT type issues over PS party chat (even when the only other people in the party are the other PS5s on the same router). Thanks again P4UL -
Has anyone had any luck getting Open NAT Type (COD MW & CW) on multiple consoles? I currently have 3 PS5s on the network (1 LAN, 2 WIFI) and, although I can usually get at least 1 of them Open NAT Type (usually the first to power on for the day, which gets 3074), the others are always Moderate and it's impacting connection, game chat, etc at times. I saw in another thread that the Open v Secured setting is bugged out in the XR1000 (if so, I hope it's fixed soon) but would welcome any settings suggestions that have worked for others. Standard UPnP was good enough to get Open NAT Type for all consoles on my last router (an old R7000) so very frustrating the XR1000 can't just sort it out... am inclined to shelve it until the firmware improves (the latest one in Dec made a big difference, but not on this issue). Thanks in advance P4UL
