  1. From everything that's been said, it would seem that none of the features are exclusive to the R1 if Netgear wants them. It would seem that all features will be available to them, it's just a matter of what they choose to add and how long it takes for them to pass them through their QA.
  2. If you don't manually change the DNS servers on each device, i.e.you leave it on "Obtain DNS server address automatically," then you'll see the DHCP server as your DNS. If you want to check what actual DNS server is being used to resolve the hostname then you can run ipconfig /all rather than ipconfig.
I hope that that translated well; my wife speaks French and she said that it was okay. What I said was: I have noticed that a lot also. I think that it started after I updated to the 1.03.6j from g. It seems to happen most often if I quit a game or leave immediately after a game and then join in a new lobby. My ping will begin jumping from what I expect (>20ms) to 900-1000ms but that isn't reflected in the game. When that happens the hit detection does not work correctly, but not to the extent that the ping reflects. I have to restart the router when that happens and it takes a lot longer to respond to my clicks on the page and to recognize the restart request. Je l'ai remarqué aussi beaucoup. 4. I gave my review based on my experience and understanding of how the device would likely be used. For the issues that you mentioned with my reviews, pertaining to the actual information I provided, I clarified what and why I said what I said. While I appreciate the kind words, I am not and do not claim to be a professional reviewer. As far as it being premature, I can't comment on what future updates will and won't do and the device is a production device; so I reviewed it. If I were a beta tester then I would inform the company of the issues so that they could fix them prior to production. BTW, after conversing with you I would have to say that you are definitely a Scott. And I'm sure that you don't need to sniff paint, you only do it in social settings.
  5. Scott, is that you? You sound like him and have an amazing knowledge of how my home is run, but Scott would know that my children loved to swing from the chandeliers until I cut them down (first the chandeliers and then the children.) He would also know that my roommates are usually too busy huffing paint to worry about router settings, which I suspect you may have some familiarity with. No router, other than the XR500, has the DumaOS and so I wouldn't expect that any other router would have these features. Many use the R1 as a gaming router and have a second router for their network. The XR500 would, more likely, be used as the main router for a home network. The R1 didn't even have the ability to be password protected until recently and so using the IP address for the router gave access to the gaming information. Because the setup menu wasn't designed for the average user on the R1 it wasn't much of an issue for most, but that's not the case with the XR500. (edit) The DumaOS gives access to many of the networks settings on the same page as where one would see the gaming information via the Dashboard, where the current software does not.(edit) Sounds like you (specifically you) would just need a better understanding of what a review is meant to do before commenting. It's not only about how I would use the product, but about how the product would be expected to be used by the majority. Everything would have been fine for me had the VPN client allowed for more than one specific VPN to be used. Additionally, for me, there are better routers with the same price-point that can be used that allow for all of the functionality that I need in a router; especially with the ability to flash custom firmware. Since I have the R1, I will have use of the NetDuma software and be able to customize my router for my home network as I see fit. My opinion is that those who currently own the R1 would be better off buying another router and let the R1 handle their NetDuma needs. But opinions are like Scotts, everybody has one.
  6. It might be easier, as a quick fix, to allow for multiple instances of the filter radius; as long as the overlap is handled. If Ping Assist isn't going to be in DumaOS, then it would be nice if those of us in the US had something else that gives us more control of who we connect to.
  7. My understanding is that the R1 will have the newest features faster because they are doing the QA in-house while Netgear has to decide to add features that they roll out and then do their own QA before doing a firmware update to the XR500.
  8. One more request for the DumaOS on the R1, could you make it possible for those in the US to select the entirety of the US without including Canada and Mexico?
  9. I'm hoping that you're joking, but just in case... I was stating that his comment concerning his need for reference to understand sharing, taken at face value and without context, was easily turned into a joke. "Low-hanging fruit" is an idiom for "something that can be achieved very easily" and then I added in the pun about my grandpa's low-hanging fruit as a joke. I put it in pink so that it was easily recognized as a joke and not in the least bit serious. I have never seen my grandpa's low-hanging fruit, in the funeral home or otherwise, and for this I am very sorry.
  10. Only one dashboard, so no sharing I'm not sure what you mean by sharing exactly. Can you describe a sharing scenario? I haven't seen such low hanging fruit since they forgot to put pants on my grandpa at his funeral, but I digress... I don't understand this point, it is a router interface so you need to login to access it. Could you elaborate? In answer to the previous and this question, I thought that the Dashboard might be accessible outside of the main router settings. I had hoped that there would be an ability to save a Dashboard so that multiple users could have their own and that one could have several configured Dashboards for different games/uses. As it stands, the Dashboard is only accessible by whomever maintains your home network and giving little ones access is inviting disaster. ...can force servers just like normal if some are not playing how you'd like, you get the same effect. It's much more tedious that way. I don't normally game using only ping based connections, but I use it when local servers seem congested. Favourite features from the R1 can be made if Netgear requests it but it is completely different software it is not meant to be a direct copy of R1 software. I understand, but it's the only DumaOS I can comment on. The R1 didn't show you the ping of all the others in the lobby but peer ping will be something we'd like to introduce assuming Netgear would like that feature. I was referring to the peer ping, it was nice to have but I get that things change; doesn't mean that I like it. You're actually on an older version, as far as I am told there will be a new update soon (it's already complete but going through final stages of testing). Script error does not happen in newest version. I'm on the current version available, but I get what you're saying. There is not VPN Client Support unless you use HIDEMYASS - so, basically, there's HIDEMYASS support. That's nothing to do with us as everything in Settings was done by Netgear. I am sure the Netgear team would add additional services based on demand. After 2 hours on the phone with Netgear (it seems that there were very few who were trained on the DumaOS and those who were weren't trained well) they stated that it was something that they are required to support, but that the code "came from NetDuma." They stated that they would contact the engineers to see if something could be done and what the plans were, so... it's HideMyAss or no client VPN for the foreseeable future. If you have any added Toolbars they can cause the bottom of the Dashboard to be inaccessible You should be able to scroll down the dashboard assuming there are panels there. I agree, that's why I mentioned it. Seriously, it could have been a result of me editing the dashboard in one browser and then refreshing in the other, I don't recall the test-case, but it just hides the bottom border making it appear that there should be more to the page. DumaOS on Firefox looks terrible (default scrollbars) and often threw generic script errors on resizing panels that you have to acknowledge. I can't comment too much on the scroll bars but we do want to remove them if possible. Script errors are fixed in the update coming that I mentioned above. It just looks ugly; that's why I put it in "The Ugly." Aware of that issue, I believe icons are not as big on new version. Though a refresh to fix the issue is not bad, future updates will include fixes for bugs found by users as is the way with software by big or small companies. Just reporting what I saw. The grid for the panels is fairly largely spaced and so it limits the layout possibilities. I'm not sure what you mean as you're able to resize and move the panels how you want as well as extend the page downward. In basic terms, it's like having an 8x8 grid verses a 20x20. You can configure the layout within the bounds of the grid, but they snap to the grid. Spacing from one size to another within the grid seems fairly spacious and that limits configuration options. Chrome scrollbars don't have a definitive endpoint - this is only a problem for panels with buttons where one could think that they should be scrolling, but can't. What do you mean by this? Something found by my 8 year old. If there are buttons at the bottom of a panel with a scrollbar, there is no indication that the button area can't be hovered on to scroll. The user can feel as though they are in a scrollable area, but it doesn't scroll. Multiple people changing settings for one router at the same time wouldn't make sense. The Geo-Filter allows 4 devices to be filtered at a time, Traffic Prioritization can prioritise more than one device at a time so I'm not sure what individual settings multiple people would need to have different. And there's the rub, right? I'm certain that many people will expect to get this for their children or expect share the use in a house full of non-related people to use (i.e. roommates, friends, live-in Furry, etc.) only to find out that they would have to give them full access to the router to do so. I don't feel that they should have access to change anything, but I do think that they should have the ability to see the metrics passively. Having the dashboard inaccessible without Administrator credentials is a definite no-go for anyone wanting to share with family and friends. Have covered this above. Have covered this above, too. Like I stated before, having some of these same issues on the R1 isn't as big of a deal for me as it's not my primary router. I hope that you don't feel that I was overly critical, I just gave my opinion on what I liked and disliked about the OS and what worked for me and what didn't. I still enjoy the R1 and appreciate the impact you all made to gaming as a whole and my experience in particular.
  11. Okay, I've had my XR500 for about 24 hours now and I am going to try to leave out anything that could be attributed to the hardware. This is what I think of the DumaOS: The Good: Menu system is easy to navigate Setting up a custom Dashboard is nice and easy After a short delay, DumaOS is here Zim had stated that there was no option to Share Excess Bandwidth, but it's there as a checkbox hidden on the QoS page The Bad: Only one dashboard, so no sharing Dashboard is only accessible after logging into router using Administrator credentials (don't let your kids use it) Gone are the days of using ping as a way to connect to lobbies - set yourself in the ocean and you'll be gaming with the fishes No access the see the ping of all of the others in the lobby while gaming, only host or individually selected circles on the map Not well coded for Firefox - use Chrome (fine for NetDuma, not Netgear) There is not VPN Client Support unless you use HIDEMYASS - so, basically, there's HIDEMYASS support The Ugly: If you have any added Toolbars they can cause the bottom of the Dashboard to be inaccessible DumaOS on Firefox looks terrible (default scrollbars) and often threw generic script errors on resizing panels that you have to acknowledge On resizing the Geo-Filter Map, the icons will remain the size used for the beginning panel size unless you refresh the window (make the panel larger and you have GIANT icons) The grid for the panels is fairly largely spaced and so it limits the layout possibilities The Meh: Chrome scrollbars don't have a definitive endpoint - this is only a problem for panels with buttons where one could think that they should be scrolling, but can't Scrolling is an issue as you'll get caught in any panels with scrollbars, but it does exit once you reach the top of the scrollbar and continue (often an issue with this type of setup) The Bottom-Line (DumaOS and Router): If you don't have the NetDuma already then the XR500 is fine (as long as you don't want to flash third-party firmware); I paid nearly as much for the R1 and the Netgear Hardware is quite a step up. If you have the NetDuma then there are better routers for the price; especially if you use a VPN other than HIDEMYASS The Netgear, with the advanced hardware, is meant to be a primary router (a shared device), but the DumaOS seems to be made to be used by an individual. Hopefully by the time it's on the R1 they can allow multiple instances of the dashboard Having the dashboard inaccessible without Administrator credentials is a definite no-go for anyone wanting to share with family and friends We always miss the familiar, but I truly lament the loss of the ping filter as there are times when some servers are too bogged down I also liked seeing the pings that resolved in a lobby during games as it gave me an indicator of what the overall lag would be At the end of the day, everything said and done, I won't be keeping the XR500. Issues that I accept from a small startup are not issues that I accept from a large company. I can have my cake and eat it too by using a similarly priced router with better specs and using the R1 for my gaming needs. Additionally, that allows me to flash third-party firmware on my main router while keeping the NetDuma software intact. I hope that this was helpful...
  12. No rants from me, not upset, and definitely don't need to vent. My comments weren't about how I feel. I appreciate your informing me that I can post elsewhere; it wasn't helpful in the slightest, but I appreciate the effort, Matty. My comments were my concerns about how the company handled the current update. Seeing your post I am reminded of the words of Bill Clinton: "It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If the--if he--if 'is' means is and never has been, that is not--that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement....Now, if someone had asked me on that day..." -No feelings were, hopefully, harmed by this quote-
  13. I really want to stop responding, I really do! Unfortunately, I have a sickness when it comes to factual discussions; I think that it's because I truly enjoy gaining knowledge. My comments were not of an emotional nature and have nothing to do with wants. I have had the R1 for a couple of years and never made a comment on the delays of the DumaOS. My issue is simply with an expectation created by a company not being met as a result of conscious decisions by the company rather than issues beyond their control. In a former life I worked for a software company and, try as we might to avoid it, we set expectations that we thought that we would easily meet or beat only to have something unexpected happen that caused delays. This is not that. Businesses are held to the expectations that they create for their customers in a very real sense. If I had expressed that an update with certain features would be available to the end user and then only provided the update to certain clients, not for testing but in it's completed form, then our feet would have been held to the fire. My XR500 will be here tomorrow and I'll have the DumaOS; I'm very curious to see all that they've done. I just didn't perceive that they handled this properly, as a business, and I stated so as eloquently as I could; no feels just facts.
  14. I'm not really certain why we're discussing a company that made certain promises (NetDuma) and one that didn't (Microsoft); -and before you state that I made the comparison, mine stated if MS had promised and breached as Duma did-, but okay, I'll play... I can't recall the previous versions, but the bits were released for any who wanted them for Windows 10 at the same time as the RTM was sent out (same bits.) That's the RTM sent; not actually in production units, just sent to manufacturers. DumaOS is ready, we don't have it and it was promised: Luke stated June 6, 2017 that "Once usability is in place we can then widen the beta to more users. So this means we will be expanding the beta pool soon through the Coal Mine. Open Beta should then follow not long afterwards." According to the DumaOS timeline "Development continues - Beta testing of DumaOS completes..." in 2017; it's now 2018 and no open beta. Look, guy, I wouldn't even be commenting any further if there weren't people trying to discredit what I've stated without facts; my statements are based on the facts as I understand them, not some emotional contempt. I would never claim that I can't be wrong, but I have yet, in this instance, to be shown to be. Your disagreements with my statements haven't really pertained to my statements, but instead were some straw man creation. Whether intentional or not, you're not really adding any knowledge concerning my comments only seemingly trying to muddy my points.
