Has my XR500 Finally Given up?

Recommended Posts

I can't stay in a game for more than a few minutes, and there seems to be strange things happening with the R Apps. VPN app has "undefinedDB" under the byte size which is 0 on the system info page. Talking of VPN's I can't use my HMA VPN at all, anything that is connected to it doesn't stay connected to anything for long. I have factory reset at least 2 times without anything changing. I'm surprised that it has stayed on this long to let me type this. The irony of all this is I got a new XR700 yesterday, but I had to return it because, it was shipped with a USA 60-120V power adapter, and not a 240V for the UK. They are shipping a new one. Until then I have to make do with the XR500 and this strange problem.

Please see the log below: Seems all squiffy to me, maybe one of you guys can tell me what is going on. Whatever it is please help.

Thank you for the info, that seems to have worked and my VPN now works. Still a little confused though because I can't remember if the R app was displayed as it is in the picture below. I think it might have been that way, but only noticed because I was paying more attention because my VPN stopped working.

Thanks for the help it is very much appreciated.

We haven't tested that panel fully yet as we don't allow you to interact with it, it's there in preparation for a future update where it will become usable so I wouldn't pay too much attention to that feature. Glad your issue is resolved :)

So I am very convinced that my XR500 is starting to struggle, can't factory reset at all, even tried the 30-30-30 method (nothing), Qos; well the service is much better when its off. Even with all its problems it's been a good router, and served me well for some time.

So; and I think I mentioned earlier in this thread, I am getting a XR700. Already bought two from Amazon; they shipped with an American power supply both times, and sadly had to be returned. I decided to risk it a third time, because third times a charm.

Just for clarity: I have ordered a NETGEAR XR700-100EUS, and hoping the EUS means it will have a universal power adapter, and not mean something like :- Exclusively US. Could anyone confirm if this will be good for me to use in the UK?

What do you mean it won't factory reset? - If you use the button or do it via the interface are settings still preserved? Are ALL devices connected to the router? Otherwise it can't control them properly in order to eliminate local congestion. As far as I am yes, EUS will give you a UK power adapter.

When I use the reset button on the unit, the one that requires a paperclip, or similar pointy instrument. All settings, passwords, even the device table was preserved. In fact the only time anything changed was when I done a 30-30-30, hold the reset for 30 secs, then knock off the router while holding the reset, and then knock it back on again while holding the reset. This did remove the devices from the device list, but all other settings remained. I take it that a hardware reset wipes some sort of EPROM? Alex stated in a previous post "If a factory reset isn't working... I think you should try downgrading to the oldest available firmware, and then allow the unit to auto-update itself back to current.". So is this a known problem?

I have recently had a second internet line installed for general use, so fortunately have the ability to use one gaming device exclusively on that router. So Qos is not a requirement.

I would like that the XR500 is not a complete basket case, but believe its had its day, and have absolutely no faith in it anymore! My internet line drops 5-6 times a day, it does this with my ISP provided router but not at the same frequency. I need a new router to really get to the bottom of what is going. The additional access to the internet I now have will also enable me to get to the bottom of the problem.

I haven't used that method this time, though will give it one last go, just for the hell of it. The new router should be here on Thursday. So all's well.

Let us know how you get on with that method and the new router, fingers crossed the new router works perfectly and that is was just a faulty router.

Sorry its taken a while to get back to you. I have consigned the XR500 to the electronic spare parts box in my workshop (The last post could be heard in the background, and I fought back back a tear or two.). On a more cheery note the XR700 is performing very well, and given me back a stable internet connection. I now know that it wasn't an issue with my ISP or the service they provide.

I may go for one last resurrection attempt with Duma 3.0 beta. I think I managed to sign up very early just waiting for it now... patiently (Thats the only grumble you will hear from me!).
