Losing Ethernet connection - But Wifi is ok

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am losing internet connection, on wired equipment by ethernet on 2 computers and 2 consoles (PS4 Pro and Xbox One X).
However I still have Wi-Fi as my Phone and Printer still works.

The only way I can get ethernet connection back is rebooting the XR500.
This has happened multi times, over the last 5 days, a friend also with the same router has had this issue.

This is also happening multi times per day.

I have the latest Firmware for the XR500

I am using Virgin Meida Cable connection, which I have done for a long time.

Here is the Log I got from Settings -> Monitoring > Logs before rebooting:

Hi Gaz - sorry to hear of these drops.

Could you first of all make sure you are on the latest version by checking if a firmware update is available in Settings

Then, could you factory reset set your router in Settings > Administration > Backup Settings, then just click erase

Finally, if you have IPv6 enabled, please could you disable it.

Let us know how you get on. Thanks.

Hi,

Just a quick update, not had a chance to factory reset, but change to make sure I had the lastest firmware and turned disabled IPv6 and so far touch wood it been ok.

Will be doing a factory reset next week, so will update you after that.

Also make sure you do not have dial on demand set, it should be always on...just in case

I don't have this setting displayed as Does your Internet connection require a login? is set to No.

As Virgin Media is a cable, and not through the phone line.

I too have this problem. I can never get my ps4 slim to connect to ethernet or 5ghz. 2.4 works just fine. I can’t wrap my head around why. I have the latest firmware, ipv6 is not turned on and I have a cable modem. Any thoughts?

Run through this: https://connection.support.playstation.com/en_GB#/productand see if that gives you any resolutions for the situation

tried this and it said to contact my ISP. theres nothing wrong with my internet. I've tried an older router and it works just fine. when I connect the xr500 it has a problem connecting hardlined.

oh and also to the 5ghz wifi doesn't work as well. I can only use the 2.4ghz

This doesn't make much sense from a router perspective. I'd recommend contacting Netgears 24/7 Support line as they may have heard of something like this before and will be to do with their Settings. Login here for the number: http://www.netgear.com/support/

I have done a factory reset on the first xr500 I bought and got a new xr500. This is the second one i’ve had and both times the hardline hasn’t worked. I’ve also had a netgear rep remote access my laptop and he couldn’t figure it out. The only thing that seems to work is connecting to the 2.4ghz wifi. So far the only thing I haven’t tried is a cat6 ethernet and contacting playstation. I’m sure they would say its either the router or my ISP. The only things I know that i’m 100% sure about is that it isn’t my ISP and it isn’t my playstation. It must be some kind of setting or my ethernet port isn’t compatible with the xr500 (if that makes sense) or I need a cat6 cable.

The only thing I can think of is that it may not support beamforming or mumimo so disable those for 5Ghz in Settings > Advanced Settings > Advanced Wireless. In terms of ethernet I can't see what that would be, let me research it and get back to you.

I’m also seeing this problem and it’s disconnecting ALL my ethernet devices. WiFi devices stay online. I have to reboot the darn thing daily in order to get things to work. It’s extremely frustrating. I’ll anything to help but I need a resolution.

Turn off (Disable) IPv6 and make sure you have the latest Firmware, that is what worked for me.

Hi, welcome to the forum! The advice above is great - please let us know which version you're on. Also please let us know more about your setup like which devices are connected and how, as well as any secondary routers and the model of your ISP modem. Thanks!

As well as the above advice, if you do get the issue a factory reset will fix it. I've sent all the data to Netgear so hopefully they can reproduce it and make a fix.
