Compatible with Apple?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm very interested in getting the R1 gaming modem but have a few questions.  We only run Macintosh computers, so i'd like to make sure everything is compatible with that.  We also run an Apple Airport Extreme router, and Motorola Surfboard eXtreme modem.

My wife wants to keep running the surfboard for firewall and security support.  The way i understand it, i should be able to use both routers?

Thank you for your help.

You are correct, I'd do the following:

Modem (Obtains IP from ISP)

Wire this to the Netduma -> (Firewall, NAT, DHCP)

Wire this to the Apple Airport Extreme -> (WiFi, internal hard drive)

That easy.

Thanks abc, I agree with everything he just said.

Sorry to be pedantic though, but the R1 is a router NOT a modem. In case you're interested a modem is a device that converts it from one communication medium to another.

For example your modem converts it from Ethernet to the Internet line. The Internet line could be cable, fiber, DSL, etc. Our router goes from Ethernet to Ethernet, so its not a modem but only a router.

Hope that helps.

LOL.  I had meant R1 Router, was very very sleepy when i sent that post in.

Thanks for everyone's help. Hopefully i can get one ordered off in the next few days.

If i do run the router with firewall for her will that affect my connection or will the geo locater take care of most of that anyways?

The firewall is a firewall, it effects everything behind the router.

You can open ports so that certain applications can be open to the internet, or use UPnP which will do this automatically for you.

QoS is the feature that will most effect the other users in your house (in a good way).

Example:

You are gaming happily on AW on your X1.

Your wife opens 5 tabs (all youtube videos on how to do her makeup).

The normal response from a router is to allocate as much "internet" as is needed, so your wife will take all of your bandwidth...you will immediately begin to lag.

With QoS (Quality of Service) the router will see that your wife is "streaming" and will mark her connection (packets) as less important than your gaming packets...

So what does all the above mean? Your wife will get her videos just fine and you'll continue gaming just fine.

O happy day.

Well put abc, thanks :)

Yeah the firewall may mean you need to open ports. Otherwise it should be ok. Our router tries its best to open ports so you may not need to do anything, but in your case I suspect you may have to manually open ports if you want to keep the firewall. Don't worry though this is an easy procedure. Ask here when you need to and we can help.
