Alright got the duma...

Recommended Posts

...and you guys assured me you would walk me thru the set up as i am clueless. My current set up is isp modem and

isp router separate not one unit.So here goes the questions...

My current router is netgear 3800 wndr.I use both 2.4 and the 5 gh.Everything in the house runs on wireless except my gaming PS3.I have 2 mac computers,2 i phones and 2 other PS3's (just for netflix and blu ray).Is there any advantage to using both routers or should i just use the duma ? I'm guessing the 5 gh is the only thing the netgear has going for it.

My speeds are 60/10 according to speedtest. That's to my wireless laptop and desk top.But i never get that to my PS3 which is hardwired to the router, which always struck me as kind of odd.Is that normal or should the speeds be the same to my PS3 as they are to my computers.I've never got above 20/5 on my PS3.Again is that normal ?

And if i use both routers, how in the hell do i set it up.

I'll leave it up to you guys to tell me the best way to optimize my set up.

I want to hook it up right now but as i said earlier my wife is finishing up her masters and she has tests on line she has to take thru the school via the computer thru the camera on the mac. It's all thru some portal you set up with the school. But anyway the internet has to work and if i mess that up she's gonna kill me.This has already been explained to me in great detail and numerous times.

So there ya go,please help the dumb kid

so the best setup for you will be

modem <-> R1 (with Wifi On) <-> netgear wndr3800 (in access point mode with only wireless 5GHz enabled)

to put your wndr3800 into AP mode follow this: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20927/~/how-to-manually-set-a-wireless-router-to-access-point-%28ap%29-mode

Thanks abc you sure this isn't over my head ? I know it may be simple to you (and most guys here) but i know nothing about this stuff. If i manage to make it that far what do i do after that ? Do i just follow the directions on the quick set up card that came with the duma ?

Ok the most important thing is to make sure its port 1 of the duma that connects to the modem. Have you done that?

my lap top was but nothing else would connect to anything.I didn't even get the tour on the R1 page it asked me for my speeds and that was as far as i got.

@fuzzy clam if you want to hop into chat forum.netduma.com/chat we can go over it.

Basically,

1. Modem (unplugged from power) hooked to port 1 of the netduma

2. run cable from netduma to your laptop/desktop so you can get back here

3. plug the r1 in, wait for it to be done booting (30 seconds)

4. plug in the modem to power

Verify you have internet via the wired, go to http://192.168.88.1 and then we can chat about how to set it all up.

Never a problem, I would read the following thread: http://forum.netduma.com/topic/359-the-netduma-r1-router-does-it-even-work-bro/

and this video for geo-filter explained: http://forum.netduma.com/topic/362-geo-filter-searching/

Ok so is that the recommended set up strict and the snap mode for better gaming.Abc you know where i'm from and know my set up (cuz you did it ) lol is this the best option for me.And i still can't get more than 22/4.5 to my console.Have you got any ideas on that subject ?

I wouldn't worry about the speeds showing up on the console, I know on my ps4 it has never shown more than 25 and the Xbox one 45. I have a 100/10 connection, I think we are limited by psn and Xbox live.

that and they only have 10/100 connections to the router, but that shouldn't be the issue in these cases.

Really, and I mean this 100% games don't need that much data.  If you monitor network usage while hosting a game you are looking at maximum of ~1Mb/s Up and ~2Mb/s Down, which is nothing...

@fuzzy i'd play with strict and if you are struggling to find a game turn it off.

For snap I recommend making the geo-filter size 50km then hit the snap button, until the size is 500-1500km that will give you good gameplay and the ability to find games..

@ abc i feel like i'm kind of getting the hang of the router a little bit more, lots of things i still don't understand but will over time.Since we set up my stuff the way we did the duma is providing the security/firewall right ? Since the netgear is now just an access point with no router capabilities.I forgot to ask yesterday as it was late

yes, the duma is your firewall/security and it is running the best firewall you can have on a router.
