User123123123 Posted August 20, 2018 Share Posted August 20, 2018 I bought this Netgear router yesterday. I love the NetDuma OS so far. I am coming from an ASUS AC88U which I have used for a couple of years. One question that I have is this. Every time I reboot my desktop PC it has a new IP address. Example. It started at XXX.XXX.X.4 and now it's gotten up to XXX.XX.X.32 this happens on both just a reboot of the computer and if I turn it off for any length of time. My laptop will keep the same IP on reboots, but if I turn it off for say 5 min (to let it leave the online device manager and say offline) and then turn it back on it will have a different IP. My iPhone, iPad, and Xbox One, if I turn them off and leave them off till they leave the device manager and then turn them back on keep the original IP address. Is this normal? The only reason I ask is because the IP address on all my devices when using the ASUS router never changed in the couple of years that I used that device. They don't need to be static and I'm not seeing any issues it's just different than what I'm used to so wanted to see if that's a feature or if something isn't set up right. Thanks in advance! Hey ATTICUScc04, How is your home setup? I can only think of two things: DHCP Lease time is super aggressive so everytime a device goes offline it loses ownership of the IP it obtained previously (although I can't see an option to configure this in my XR500). Could it be a device in front of the XR500 is acting as a DHCP server (ISP Router/Modem)? You might have two DHCP servers trying to assign ips to your devices. The PC's are hard-wired and the laptops are wireless 2.4ghz. That is interesting, maybe a problem with Windows 10! Do you have any older machines with Windows 7 or 8? I read about an issue with Windows 10 machines not getting an ip address and having to manually request it via command prompt, could be a case that a 'fix' that windows implemented was for this renewal to be done on every reboot to ensure you get an ip address, maybe check if you have any updates and update one machine to see if it makes any difference. BIG__DOG Posted August 20, 2018 Share Posted August 20, 2018 go to device manager, select your computer and make a note of it's given ip address and write down the mac address also. Then, go to settings>>>>>lan and where it says "address reservations" click "add" find you computer by it's ip address you wrote down earlier and double check it against the mac address you also wrote down and select you device then click "add" again then click apply. This will give your computer a local static ip address that will not change. This can be done for any device on your network to avoid this happening again. Jack, Fraser or admin will respond and hopefully have an answer as this looks like a possible bug but I am only guessing. I have never come across this on any router. They shall respond in due course! Good to hear. I can definitely reproduce it for them. I just reset it to factory default again and connected nothing but one desktop PC with the same result. It would be good to see if this issue is 100% isolated to your laptop Thanks It happens on 2 dell laptops and 2 desktop pcs. At least those are the devices i can reproduce it on. Both laptops are wireless and the desktops are hard wired. All i have to do is reboot and they’ll pull 2 ip address at the same time in device manager and then after a minute or so the old ip is dropped and it stays with the new ip untill the next reboot or i turn it off. Then the same thing. Rinse and repeat. A little while ago i reset the router to factory settings and only used one desktop pc wih nothing else connected to the router. Same thing would happen. For troubleshooting i plugged my old asus router back in and it works normally. Same ip address for each device no matter if i turn the device off or reboot it. Same laptops and pcs. So far doing the IP Address Reservation in the router keeps the IP's from going crazy. I went ahead an added all my devices to that (20 something). When I go back to automatic it goes crazy again. Doesn't matter if it's just one device or all 20, but only seems to happen to computers and nothing else. My Xbox, for example, keeps the correct IP no matter what, same with my iPhone, Smart TV's etc. So weird. So looks like the only fix right now for me is IP Address Reservation. I have no clue what is causing automatic to be doing that. NetDuma Admins feel free to chime in. I have no problem troubleshooting to help find a fix. Guest Killhippie Posted August 21, 2018 Share Posted August 21, 2018 Just to note, I have a 5k 2017 iMac running macOS 10.13.6 and its the only device not in DHCP reservation, I can turn it off reboot it etc and it keeps the IP the router gave it. I have to say its almost like your router is forgetting devices mac addresses which may possibly point to hardware issues. I would also contact Netgear as well. I don't suppose you have tried a factory reset since you updated the firmware to 2.3.2.22 or whatever you are using? That's always a good place to trouble shoot when all else fails. As you're using DHCP the IP isn't strictly just for that device so by turning a device off that IP is now available for another device to pick it up.
