What SpeedTest Value to use

So all of a sudden having some where internet is dropping all together and additionally single devices seem to get starved form time to time. Definitely has been worse in recent compared to where I started out months ago. So wanted to play a bit with the bufferbloat. However when I plug my computer into router via ethernet I get 330 download speed and connecting via wifi I only seem to get 170 as the speed.. So Question 1) Why is there such a difference? Is this normal and 2) Which value should I use in the bufferbloat limits.. Should I use the wifi 170 or the ethernet 330?

you never get nowhere near what you do when connected via ethernet especially if it is on the 2.4ghz band. You should always use your wired values not wireless.

I also understand the difference between lan and wifi but wasn't expecting that big of a difference especially on my 5G connection.

 

However what value should I use in the bufferbloat at the max values? Should I use the wifi speed test or the lan speed test? Most of my connections are via wifi.

The ethernet speed test because that is the speed the router is receiving. Change wireless channels to a less congested one and should see speed improvement, there are always variables - wall thickness, distance etc.

I also have a similar problem. I get 900+ down connected and 300 using 5g wireless and about three feet from router in the same room. I was wondering if I can try the firmware as well if that is possible.

Try enabling HT160 under Settings>Advanced Wireless, if a wired connection is not available.

 

Avoid the 2.4ghz band if at all possible, as it is laden with latency.

I'll send you the firmware now but it's probably not the cause for the lower speeds.

 

If you go wired do you get full speeds? If yes, then try changing a different channel on 5GHz as it may be congested.

Hey, thanks for that. It does not seem to have any effect with the 5g, I'm getting the same results. I did get a message after it was rebooting that said "access to resource denied, your client has not supplied the correct authentication". When I logged back in the firmware version was updated and I am getting 120 to 140 down on the 2.4 where I was getting 50 to 80 before but I am getting the same results on 5g. I even enabled HT160 with the hopes that it would help but no luck. Yes, I get full speeds wired.

Disable QoS, do you get higher 5g speeds then?

Yup, I've learned my lesson and always disable QoS when doing my speedtests
